Can a baby develop pancreatic insufficiency?

When I changed my infant's diaper today (we had a prenatal
diagnosis of CF and have been to one CF clinic appointment) I had a
BM surprise. I've emailed our clinic to see what we need to do or
if it might be a fluke, but I wanted to get your opinion about this
diaper.

mustard-orangy in
color
waxy, extremely greasy in texture
the diaper "peeled" off her little hiney because the
substance was so sticky
took more "elbow grease" than expected to clean off her
hiney and it was a fresh BM (5 minutes MAX from BM to changing)
had a distinct odor, enough of a smell to put me back, but I can't
describe it in writing, the smell was VERY OFF her normal BM
smells

She has always had typical baby BMs. Mustardy seedy, etc. But her
last elastace (sp) test in September showed her fat content to be
elevated, but not enough to be worried since I am breast
feeding.

Ultimately, I'm wondering if this sounds in line with pancreatic
insuffiency, if it can develop after 7 weeks of normal bms, and
other possible ideas/suggestions. I was so worried about it, I took
a picture of the dirty diaper to e-mail to the clinic if they
wanted more info since we live hours away.

We were so grateful that she came into the world without any
problems. I feel I am being paranoid, but I just want to make sure
that I do what is best for my child.

Thanks in advance for your time.
oh yes, most CF babies are born with pancreatic insufficiency! this isn't abnormal at all. hopefully u can get your infant on digestive enzymes ASAP!

Well,

I hate that you are having to deal with this issue. I just wanted to let you know that yes it is possible for this issue to develop.

I was not diagnosed until age 1, but seemed to develop normally til about 6 months with few problems at all in terms of B.M.s. Then after about 6 months my mom started noticing a change in my stools, my weight and so on.

Please let us know what they doc says.

Welcome to the site also. Hope to see an update soon.

Take Care,
Lindsey

How you described the BM is exactly like my son's did when his enzymes needed to increase. Greasy, super-stinky, orangey, etc. It sounds like pancreatic insufficiency to me. He went a couple months before he was diagnosed where his stools were pretty normal, just more stinky than his cousin's were (she's about the same age). Good thinking on the picture! Now they'll know exactly what you're talking about. I often wish my son would have a poopy diaper while at the CF clinic because they're always asking how they are, if they're greasy, formed or loose, etc. and if he'd just go I could just show them first hand!

I'm glad to know the picture wasn't over the top. :) I ALMOST
posted it on here but felt that might be TMI. What a wonderfully
technological age we live in!

Hopefully we'll hear something back from the clinic tomorrow. If I
don't hear anything by lunch, I'll be calling.
That's how both my sister & myself were diagnosed in the first place (pancreatic insufficiency). We both just had a heck of a time digesting anything, so no, it's not uncommon.
If your infant is not currently taking enzymes & she starts them soon, that should make a world of difference.
Keep us posted on what you hear.
