can allergies affect the ears?

Vinny has seasonal allergies that act up around this time of year. At our last clinic visit a couple of weeks ago, we were told we can use dimetapp elixir for allergies if his allergies seem to be bugging him. This is what we used last year as well. (I'm not sure why they don't just put him on something like singulair or something for his allergies and asthma, but that's another story.)

Anyway, his nose seems to be very itchy, not running or stuffy at all, just itchy. But his ears seem to be really itchy too. He doesn't act like they hurt, he's not cranky or feverish or anything that signals an ear infection. He just keeps trying to itch them. Does anyone know if allergies can somehow affect the ears? Are they at all connected to the sinuses?

I don't know about the itchiness, but yes, it is all connected. When I get a bad sinus infection, my ears can get stopped up and even hurt (one or the other or both ). I would insist on some allergy testing (if you haven't already had it ) and a better allergy med- good luck!

Edited- Now that I think about it, I do remember itchiness! Kind of a tickling sensation that I couldn't get to! Arrgghhh!

It took 20 mins (lol), but I found you a link with an illustration of a child's sinuses, throat, and ears, and how they are connected. I hope this helps!

My husbands has trouble with his ears itching and we have always assumed it is allergies. He has been prescribed Asteline (I might not be spelling that right) nasal spray -- although we have never discussed it with his doctor, he just squirts a little bit in his ears too and it works great at relieving the itch.

On the non-prescription options, I believe it is always considered safe to use hydrogen peroxide (diluted by 50%) in the ears -- my husband uses it full strength on a Q-tip to relieve itching, but on a small child I would add a little bit of water to the peroxide first then dip the Q-tip just to be on the safe side. You can either squirt a little bit in the ear and leave a cotton ball in the ear for 5-10 minutes or just swipe around a little bit with the Q-tip (which, technically is not recommended, since the only place you are supposed to use a Q-tip is on the very outer portion of the ear and not on the inside where it is iching)
