can allergies affect the ears?

My husbands has trouble with his ears itching and we have always assumed it is allergies. He has been prescribed Asteline (I might not be spelling that right) nasal spray -- although we have never discussed it with his doctor, he just squirts a little bit in his ears too and it works great at relieving the itch.

On the non-prescription options, I believe it is always considered safe to use hydrogen peroxide (diluted by 50%) in the ears -- my husband uses it full strength on a Q-tip to relieve itching, but on a small child I would add a little bit of water to the peroxide first then dip the Q-tip just to be on the safe side. You can either squirt a little bit in the ear and leave a cotton ball in the ear for 5-10 minutes or just swipe around a little bit with the Q-tip (which, technically is not recommended, since the only place you are supposed to use a Q-tip is on the very outer portion of the ear and not on the inside where it is iching)

Thank you everyone. I suspected it had to do with allergies. I guess I'll put a call in to the clinic today see what they recommend. It's funny because he doesn't seem to have a runny nose or watery eyes, just an itchy nose and ears.

Thank you AnD for taking the time to find that illustration for me. It was very helpful.

Oh, also, what would you guys recommend as an allergy med? What do you or your children use? I'll ask the doctor specifically for it. At our last visit (and last summer) they told me to use Childrens dimetapp elixir for cold and allergies (nasal decongestant/antihistamine). It's for nasal congestion, sneezing, runny nose, and itchy, watery eyes. Thanks again!

Ainsley had a really stuffy nose a couple weeks ago that backed her up so bad that she actually ruptured an eardrum. She had never had an earache up until one night where she cried quite a bit and the next day it was done but her ears were caked with a orange substance. The doctor tells me it was probably puss.
I asked him if she was stuffed because of allergies and I was told that she was too young for them and that she probably needs her adenoids out. I was also told not to use any decongestants or antihistamines because they dry out the mucous which inturn makes it thicker and even harder to get out. Just nasal livage and saline drops. Hope this helps.
