So the docs are saying Ethan Sky's PFTs are concerning, i believe under 80. Being only 5 years old, i don't even know if he comprehends how to do them correctly.
But the doc is saying a hospitalization is needed if his PFTs don't go up tomorrow. I just don't know if it is right to do a hospitalization simply based on his PFTs.....

I asked the doc if a 2 day stay would be possible, if necessary, and he said that they standardly do a week stay. Has anyone refused to stay that long and gotten the doc to okay a home health aid???? We live with my mom and she is a nurse, so I don't know if that will help.

Please feedback!!!!!!!

Blessings to all,
missa

You can try to demand it, but I would tread carefully. We've been asked to stay 5 days so that they can make sure the abx levels were right and get everything organized with home health for the IVs at home. We were also told they wanted to see if we were headed in the right direction and she had to show improvement in her lung sounds before they'd consider letting us go home.

I agree that PFTs on a 5 year old can be less than scientific, but keep in mind that they are just trying to be proactive and stay on top of his health.

The way I've dealt with this in the past has been to listen to what they course they want to take and ask quesitons about ways to make it easier on us all (ie -- why stay 2 weeks if we can go home sooner). If you present yourself as a willing member of the care team who is not trying to dictate care, but rather be a part of the care -- you might get further. Though I'm still unsure if they'll let him go home after 2 days, but it can't hurt to broach it and discuss with them.

It makes sense to be able to go home after a few days, but it is hard to find a dr who will agree. Especially if your child has cultured pseudomonas. Then they will need to have their levels checked and that takes 4 days or so. Also, if they do a sputum culture when you guys arrive they may want you to hang around to see what it grows. That is what happened to us last time and it drove me crazy. My daughter has only cultured one thing - staph, but we needed to wait around to see if just this one time she would grow something new. Of course, she didn't.

Also, my daughter's pft's were in the 60's when she was five. I ignored the scores since she was new at pft's. I thought for sure she didn't know how to do them and her lungs were in great shape (or so I thought!). After a year of doing pft's and getting low scores, her dr said she needed IV's. After a week of doing IV's they did another pft and she scored in the 100's! It has been two years and her scores have not dropped below 100. So they were right -
her pft's were just low and she was doing the test correctly.

I always think if your instincts disagree with what is recommended, get a second opinion. I also don't remember you mentioning that your son had pseudomonas. But even if he did, I would be asking a lot of a questions.
