Can't quit coughing

I just got back from clinic... I need to start symbocort. Guess it is a combo of asthma and allergies. I also found out I have heart issues . I need to do cardiac/pulmonary rehab. My lung function hasn't dropped. I am going to finish the antibiotic. I had to do some albuterol while I was there and the redo PFT's.

At least I don't need a tune up... just yet. Going to see what rehab does for me and see if we can get these asthma symptoms under control.

When I get to the point that I cough so much that I'm extremely exhausted and throw up...then I take Hydromet syrup. Yes, it's cough medicine that suppresses your cough but it helps for when you need to sleep and not throw up your food. Good luck

I agree with randomgirl. I'm going through a rough patch with bronchitis where I'm coughing so much I can't keep food down. The hydromet syrup the doctor gave me seems to be doing the trick. I know cough meds aren't the best thing for us CFers, but sometimes it is necessary. Take care of yourself and I hope the symbocort and allergy meds help. I thought I needed a tune up as well, but just like you I think the allergies, all the pollen right now, are really to blame. And technically I don't even have allergies, the pollen is just THAT bad this year. Hope you feel better soon.

What I do is tea with a tablespoon of vinegar and then some honey. It soothes my throat the other think that helps me is to have someone rub my sore muscles while I am coughing and after just the pressure feels nice. The sam with the head aches apply pressure to your head, maybe it will help. Feel better

Pain medicine is another option. My docs (esp when in the hospital) are not fans of letting me have suppressants. (That being said, I use hydromet cough syrup at home when exhaustion from not sleeping kicks in) They prefer to prescribe pain meds to take the edge off so I keep coughing stuff up. I've used percocet (which I personally find almost useless) and morphine (works a little better for me, but harder on the stomach). I have a pretty high tolerance for meds so when they finally kick in, it just takes the edge off, rather than making all the pain stop.
