Hi.
I was wondering if you guys could help me with any sleeping tips?
My FEV1 is now 21% and I can't seem to lie flat without being tremendously short of breath. I try to use 3 pillows, but I can't seem to get comfortable. I also wake up often from coughing.
I don't want to have to sleep in a chair.
Wondering if anyone can help me?

p.s. just wanted to say hello and send hugs to everyone doing well or not so well on this site. haven't had much energy to write, but i do try to look at the posts every few days.

Hi Vicki,
Im sorry to hear you are having problems like that. I dont have much advice except this....i remember a friend of mine with cf with low lung function and he used to lay on his right side and it semed to help. I can understand the part of being uncomfortable propping yourself up to sleep. I havent slept flat in 5 years due to hemoptysis and it took a long time to get used to being propped up to sleep. I hope you find something that works.

Shoshanna,

You might try putting your pillows in an A formation. Two on the sides and one on the middle. It props you up, but makes a cozy little cocoon to sleep in. I used this position after tx, when I had chest tubes in and in pain. It worked and I don't see why it would not work for your sleeping problem.

Also, another hint for sleeping. Pre tx my lungs crackled, wheezed, made all sorts of sounds I could not stand. So I had a fan in my bedroom, not turned on me, but just turned on and it was great white noise, but also kept air moving in the room when I felt like I could not breathe.

Good luck

Have you ever tried one of those husband pillows? If you take one of those and prop like two regular pillows against it, it elevates you pretty well but you won't be sitting totally straight up!
