Carbon Dioxcide and CF

My brother is 28 with CF and I myself am 36 with CF. My brother was admitted to hospital on Monday as he has pnamonia(not sure of spelling) in his lungs, full in one lung and a bit in the other. The doctors are saying that his "Carbon Dioxcide" levels are high and his body is having trouble getting rid of em. What does this mean for him? He is using a face mask and is in the Kingston Ontario Hospital one level lower than critical. HOw does ones body get rid of Carbon Diozcide levels and what does this mean for him. Will he be OK?

Thank you.....

Carbon dioxide builds up in your system when you don't ventilate (breath) efficiently. In your brothers case due in part to his pneumonia. In some cases the body will compensate on its own, in very severe cases people need to be ventilated by a machine (life support) to rid the body of the carbon dioxide. It can be severe but each case is different, I will keep your brother in my prayers.

Hey, i am 20yrs old and i went into the hospital in aug with an o2 sat of 50% Everyone was shocked i was still awake and moving. I had just moved to hawaii a week before that so i had not time to get a doc. So i came very lucky to have stumbled upon my doc now. She is sooo smart. She tested everything in my body for anything possible. Come to find out that my docs never tested for carbon dioxide. Well, she did. She told my husband that my levels were at very dangereous levels and that she was supprised i was still living. I was put in the icu in critical condition. From that point on after they got my o2 under control, they put me on a Bi Pap. It is similar to a c Pap. Now every night i use it while i sleep, and it keeps my levels down. At first i hated it but after i started to use it and noticed that i didnt have any more headaches i use it non stop! It is very quiet and my nasel mask is very comfortable. So you might ask your doc about getting a bi pap.
