I was told last night that what they thought was the winter vomiting bug is now Clostridium Difficile and I am out of my mind with worry. It is a bank holiday over here and I can't get any questions anwsers to my questions. So here goes can I still be transplanted even though I have suffered from C Diff? Please help.

Sure. You can get a transplant after C-Diff, but probably not until the C-Diff has resolved.

Because the C-Diff lives in the gut and not the lungs, it wouldn't be "removed" with transplant (unlike, say, a mild PA infection in the lungs), so they wouldn't want to transplant you with an active C-Diff infection. I could be wrong though, and there may be exceptions. I know C-Diff is a fairly common pre- and post-tx complication for CFers, b/c it's typically caused by antibiotics (which deplete the good bacteria in your gut and allow the C-Diff to flourish). I've been treated for C-Diff before. It definitely doesn't disqualify you from a transplant.

By the way, typical treatment is with flagyl -- a nasty antibiotic that is nonetheless better than the infection! Good luck...in most cases C-Diff resolves without a many problems, I believe.

Hey,
I had a bad case of C. diff that ended up shutting down my digestive tract in July of last year. That was also the time they decided that I needed transplant. The transplant doctors and infectious disease doctors worked togther to come up with a treatment plan. I ended up on IV and PO flagyl for weeks then just PO flagyl for 3 weeks after discharge. After I was symptom free for a month, they retested me for it, then listed me for tranplant. They cant list you while you have an active C. Diff infection and I now have to be super vigilant about stomach infections to make sure it doesnt return now that my immune system is lowered from my anti rejection meds. I am sure that once your infection is cleared, you will be cleared for transplant. Good luck!

I know someone who has had a lot of problems with C-Diff and was still transplanted. Like others have said though, they won't transplant you with an active infection!

I got C-Diff about 4 months after my transplant in 2007 and was put on Flagyl for it. I felt great while I was on the Flagyl but after a day of being off of it, all the pains came right back and I was transferred to my transplant clinic in Cleveland. I was about to go home when the transplant team said they just wanted the colorectal team to look at me and make sure things were fine. Well, Dr. Vogel came in after he looked over my chart and told me I needed surgery right away to have my large intestine removed!! I was shocked!!

I had the surgery about an hour after that and had to have an ileostomy/colostomy bag. Dr. Vogel said that I was actually worse than they thought and that I probably would have been dead in the next week or so had they not removed my intestine. I had two more surgeries to correct things and ended up having the colostomy bad for 9 months. It sucked!!

Anyway, the point of my story is to make sure you get it taken care of right away...don't mess around with C-Diff!! Even though I had mine taken care of immediately, it didn't help because of all of the meds I was on pre-transplant and all the ones I had to be on immediately post transplant. It really screwed up my digestive tract.

I am now on a probiotic three times a day to keep my small intestine healthy!
