Caught influenza despite flu shot!

So sorry you have the flu! Pretty sure I had it this year and my daughter with CF too even though we all get the flu shot. We did not get swabbed but We had all the symptoms, fever, sore throat, cough, I (don't even have CF) and I coughed up a couple mucus plugs.

Drink as much fluids as you can! Gatorade was our friend. Do you have someone to do manual CPT on you? Sometimes that can help focus on certain areas.

My daughter with CF ended up on Prednisone, cipro, Zyvox and TOBI...It took her a long time to get better..WE did treatments every 4 hours. Lots of rest, lots of probiotics, deep breathing exersizes. Chicken soup, eat anything you can tolerate...Motrin and Tylenol for fever.

Do not hesitate to call your CF doc if something doesn't feel right. I think I spoke with my daughter CF doc at least once a week , if not more when she was sick.

I got the flu (influenza A) this year despite getting a flu shot. I got over most of the classic symptoms after a few days which the docs said was probably because the shot made my body react more quickly even if it wasn't quick enough to stop the infection completely. I couldn't take tamiflu because my cultures didn't come back until day 4 of symptoms. My lungs hurt for at least a week and I needed to be on O2 during the day (not normal for me). Now about 3.5 weeks after the start of all that and I'm still fatigued. Grrr stupid flu.

Thanks for everyone's support and info. I was the last in the household to get infected and also so far the least effected. Not sure if that's because of innate resilience or because of Tamiflu. I will say I feel tons better since starting the antiviral though. Hopefully tonight I can sleep. My body was fatiqued but my mind was running laps last night. I'm blaming the med. Maybe it is the Naproxin Sodium not the Tamiflu that is doing that. I will try no Naproxin tonight and see if I sleep better.

I'm glad you are starting to feel better and that you were able to start the Tamiflu in time to help you. I've heard that the flu shot didn't give coverage to one of the strains that went around this year. I hope you are completely over this soon w/no complications.

I'm so sorry!! I've had the flu 4 times. 2 times when I was very little, and it did turn into pneumonia. And 2 times as an adult which was easier for me to fight-one of those times was during my first pregnancy. (very scary but I was ok) All those times I've gotten it despite having had the flu shot.
In fact for many years, in Feb/March I would get sick with flu like symptoms, or just a real bad virus, each year. Now I get my flu shot later into the season (Oct, Nov) bc my theory is that by later winter it has worn off.
I'm sure you are doing everything you can, but try to not freak out bc that won't help you. Everyone that gets the flu gets slammed whether they have Cf or not.
My sister in law is a nurse and she also told me that the flu shot this year is not covering many of the strains of flu out there.

On a side note, I do not ever get the Flu or Pneumonia shot. I had the Pneumonia shot in 2003 and it was good for 5 years and I contracted pneumonia + double pneumonia TWICE. There are just so many strains of the flu it's impossible to protect and shield from them all :/
