Columbia now has a NEW PFT machine.

I went in on Tuesday and did my PFT's on the old machine and had the same numbers.

Then on the new machine, my FEV1 dropped 20 points! Now, I understand that it's relative and I've been told that all patients have had this, but it seems like a pretty big drop despite the advancement of technology.

Anyone with already low numbers have even lower numbers? I'm thinking that pre TX, I was at 20% then I must've been closer to 15%.

hahaha. not laughing at you, i just love this thread.

i went in LAST tuesday (note: can we get lederer and wilt to get with the program and schedule us on the same week, please?), and get this: my FEV was within 1 point. seriously. it went from 82 to 81. what the heck?! gary was stunned.

personally i just wasn't a fan of blowing the 8 efforts it took to get 3 sets of consistent results. i think i blew those last three so high mainly out of frustration -- by that time i was GOING to blow hard if it killed me <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif" border="0"> but yeah, i'm definitely the odd (wo)man out. everyone else i've talked to has had the same problem as you.

I'm not at Columbia, but at my center I notice a pretty big difference between the handheld spirometers they use in the clinic and the larger machine, which they use on bronch days. It's very annoying. I just trust my home spiro, as long as that is consistent, I'm not too worried. I'm up to about 80 percent on my home spiro. I have a tough time getting good FVC readings at home though.

Hi I went last week also. I had been tested on the old machine and my # were higher. Then on the new machine they were at least 10-15% lower. I dont understand this. I mean i am pre tx so how are they going to know which # to go by. Its a little frustrating to me .

As long as you were the same (or about) on the old machine, they will just figure that the "new" number = the old number.

So, you're the same, but your FEV1 is lower.

On the bright side, your LAS is higher and that means you're closer to the promise land <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

My FEV1 is back up to "normal" on the new machine. Dr. Wilt was stumped. Oh well......

denise, the docs are aware of the change, so it'll be fine. the only annoying thing is that the machine will be different than your CF doc's (not sure if you use dimango?) - so your score can go up and down and all around in between tx clinic days. crazy system. they should just go by the actual liters blown out.
