Cayston/ Tobi

My son who is 13 cultured pseudomonas for the first time. They tried him on the tobi and after the third dose he felt like his air ways closed up and he couldn't breath. Almost like asthma but he has never had any asthma like symptoms before. We stopped the tobi and were switched to cayston. On his first dose of cayston the same thing happened. Before both the tobi and cayston I did give him 2 puffs of albuterol. I ended up just having him hold the inhaler near his mouth which seemed to help but that certainly won't give him the medication he needs.

Has this happened to anyone? I am just wondering what they will do if he can't tolerate either drug? That just doesn't seem good.

Hi my daughter also found Tobi very hard to tolerate, caused her to feel very tight and cough a lot so we were switched to a different vertion called Bramitob which doesnt seem to cause as much irritation. It comes in a 4ml tube but contains the same concentration of tobramycin

I nebulize Albuterol/Atrovent and do a vest session before using Tobi. Using an inhaler might not be enough.

Thank you so much. I really appreciate your input. Last night I did think of using a nebulizer of albuterol as opposed to the inhaler. That might help him. It is also good to know about this Bramitob. It was a bummer to culture psuedomonas in the first place but then the thought of not to being able to use these medications REALLY stressed me out. I'll ask his doctor about this stuff. Thanks again!

Try doing the albuterol in the neb and then waiting about 10 minutes before doing the TOBI/Cayston. Give the airways that few minutes to open up from the albuterol before doing the antibiotic. This may not work but it may. It works for me with Cayston but I still can't tolerate TOBI no matter what. But when I was doing one of the research studies with Cayston about a year ago they made me do albuterol then wait the 10 minutes before doing the Cayston.
