but i have a question too, does cepacia show up on sputum samples which get sent off to the labs? or is special testing required to find cepacia?</end quote></div>
Yes, they would generally find it in a regular sputum sample.

<div class="FTQUOTE"><begin quote>So is staying away from otehr pwcf the best thing to do to avoid cepacia? and is cepacia in the air like pseudomonas? </end quote></div>

Actually Cepacia can be airbourne, hence the 3 foot rule. When i was first diagnosed with cepacia i was in the hospital ( first time in there) for a sinus surgery. I went in very healthy and left with cepacia. The first thing my Dr. said about cepacia is that it is airbourne and it could have come from anywhere. Unfortunately Golf courses used to use it to fertilize their lawns. I believe this practice has been stopped, but it wreaked havoc on people with cf. It also thrives in rotting onions, can live for up to a year on a moist surface and several days on a dry surface.
You should definitely avoid being too close to anyone with cepacia. Now that i have cepacia i dont want to be around anyone with cf because i dont want whatever bug they have that i might not. Just always keep the 3 foot rule , use hand sanitizer when you go to the cf clinic, and
try to stay out of the hospital. But like Lauren said, you dont want to let your fear of getting it get out of perspective.

oh i heard they have to do special testing in order to be able to find it, which means you may have it and you would probably never know...
unless they suspect or you ask them to test for it specifically

Do they test for it under a regular sputum sample which you give at every clinic or do you have to request for the labs to test for cepacia also?
