CF and ADD

Isabel is 10 w/cf and diagnosed with ADD. She is really struggling to finish work at school and keep up. I sometimes feel I'm too hard on her. How much rest does a cfer need. She never complains that she is tired and struggles to fall asleep. I read about some very intelligent cf kids, which I believe she is, but schoolwork just doesn't come easy. Is there any relation between CF and ADD, maybe because she is not absorbing all the essential fats????. Just feeling sad tonight because I don't know how to help her cope.
Mom of Isabel(10) and Karla(5) both with CF

There are some vitamins that CFers are lacking in that also correlate to vitamins that are helpful in ADD. The one I know for sure about is Magnesium.
Blessings,
Missa

My now 7 yr old dd, no cf, was diagnosed with ADHD when she started Kindergarten. I know how frustrating it can be. I have found that structure definitely helps my daughter. She too also had trouble falling asleep. They just can't wind down. Most of these kids are brilliant. I think Albert Einstein had ADD/ADHD <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">
My daughter is on medicine for her ADHD...and it took a long time to get where we are today. Just like CF, there a lot of support groups out there that provide valuable information.
Best of luck...I've been there.

My daughter was the same age when she was diagnosed. The ARNP(with a Masters in child psychology) started her on Strattera which is not a stimulant ADD drug, but sort of an antidepressant type. It's taken only once a day. It took about three months for the full effect to be noticeable. The ARNP recommended taking it at night as it might help her fall asleep. She said that as she got used to it that effect would wear off, but by then maybe better sleeping habits would have set in. It's working very well for us. What used to be traumatizing and emotional is now just routine (homework). It helped with staying on task and focus.
Also, I read a great book that is about ADD in girls specifically. It helped me decide to get her to a counselor and figure this out: "Understanding Girls With AD/HD" by Kathleen G Nadeau, Ph.D., Ellen B Littman, PhD., and Patricia O Quinn, M.D.
Good luck!
