CF and Anemia?

Hello, all. Just to refresh your memories, I was sent to the hospital on Tuesday with high fevers, chills, severe SOB, and just generally feeling like crap. Thought it was because of the MRSA.

Well, it turns out that my latest sputum culture showed only normal staph and psudo. No MRSA (yay!).

So what was causing me to be so sick so often?

Anemia.

Went to the hospital after feeling like a truck hit me, got a blood test, and my red blood cell count was at 8. Should be 12 or higher. Not to mention my iron was a great 10 out of what should be 110. So, they gave me a shot of Procrit in the stomach and I'm home on Zosyn and iron supplements. No wonder I've been sick so often...you can't heal from a staph infection with anemic blood!

So, I'm just curious...is this a common thing with CFer's, because I'd never seen anything suggesting possible anemia in CF patients. I never would have guessed that to be the problem. Has anyone else here delt with anemia? If so, how long did it take you to recover?

Just curious...thanks, guys and gals!

I have only dealt with acute bouts of it usually when I have a terrible infection. As a whole I dont have a lot of problems, but when I am sick EVERYTHING goes haywire. Our bodies deal with a lot so to me its not a surprise.

I think iron defiency is common.

I'm watched really close fo anemia and low iron as my mom and grandmother have had severe problems with both of those

I've had severe anemia for years. It's horrible, but you learn to cope. It makes me pretty exhausted. One bit of advice that really has helped me is taking birth control. It limits how much blood I lose during my cycle.

Also-- if you actively culture pseudo, don't take iron infusions! While it would help the anemia immensely, it can send the pseudo out of control (it's a bug that eats iron).

I had anemia quite a lot as a youngster, and it was quite common for me and other people with cf who I knew to experience this from time to time.

At the time I was put on galfer which was an iron tablet. Hopefully once you get this sorted you won't be ask sick! <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

What do you mean by 'iron infusions'??? Is this just taking an oral iron supplement?

Anemia runs in my family to an extent and i have always suffered from it on and off, to fix it, my doctor prescribes 3 months of iron tablets (ferro-gradumet one a day) and after three months i'm always fine again - however i'm concerned if this could be sending my pseudo's nuts!!???

When i discovered i was aneamic most recently i did some research as I eat plenty of dark green leafy vegetables and red meat these days so i was surprised to hear i was aneamic - it turns out that co-trimoxazole (also known as DS Bactrim) taken too often can cause iron deficiency aneamia...and as i'd just been on it for three weeks and am on it about 4 times a year, i now expect to have to take iron constantly. Really concerned about it's link to pseudo so if somebody could explain this to me more I'd be very appreciative.
