SORRY! THE BABY KEPT HITTING THE KEYBOARD! ANYWAYS, I AM AN ADULT WITH CYSTIC FIBROSIS AND MY LOCAL DR. (NOT MY CF DR.) HAS JUST PRESCRIBED PAXIL FOR ME. I HAVE HAD SOME ANXIETY AND MILD DEPRESSION. THE REASON I AM CONCERNED THOUGH, IS THAT SOMEONE TOLD ME THAT THESE KIND OF MEDICATIONS CAN CAUSE HEAVIER PRODUCTION OF MUCUS. MY DR. DID NOT TELL ME THIS AND I WAS WONDERING HOW MANY OF YOU HAVE TAKEN THESE MEDICATIONS AND IF THEY HAVE HELPED YOU OR CAUSED ANY WORSENING OF CF SYMPTOMS. OR IF YOUR CF DR.'S HAVE WARNED OF ANYTHING LIKE THIS! THANK YOU SO MUCH!

Hi! I have been on Paxil for 3 yrs and have never experienced those side effects. Paxil is a good drug, because it doesn't have many side effects. If you are feeling depressed, I would recommend seeing a therapist as well. Mary

I have been on Zoloft for 4 + years. I have not had any negative effects. In fact the Zoloft has helped my depression a lot. I was taking this before I was diagnosed with CF & the staff at the CF clinic were told about my takinging Zoloft & they said don't change. They told me that most CF'rs suffer from some form of depression, whether the cause is the malabsorption of vitamines or the fact of cronic sickness. Infact at my adjult clinic, they have a social worker who meets with you to go over any problems and addresses the depression issue. MARY55W/CF

It's gotten a bad rap in the past but is a life sustainer for me. I don't have any side effects that I'm aware of. It's a great med as far as I'm concerned. I'm pretty sure that Paxil is a selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitor like prozac. Good luck.

i've been on Paxil for 4 years now and it's the best thing that could have happened to me. It has helped with anxiety and slight deppression, and I highly recommend it. One word of caution. I did try to get myself off of it once (what a mistake), and I weaned myself off of it like prednisone, and I got vertigo (where everything is dizzy and I couldn't stand up), and I had severe flu-like symtoms. SO.... once you get on it, it's a SLOW wean to get off of it, and only your doctor can help you with that. But, as we get older, our brain's ability to produce serotonin decreases anyway, so I think it's a good idea to take paxil forever.
I was one to never want to use anything for depression, because my depression was usually short lived. Then last summer i had a very bad bleed one night that changed my life forever.The story is a long oone, so i will get to the jist of it quickly. I had to have an embolization and thought my problems would be over with hemoptysis. Then 2 weeks after i was home ,totally out of nowhere i suffered a true panic attack which scared me so bad i thought i was going to choke. I tried to deal with it on my own till i had another bleed that required another embolization, and thats when i realized i cannot handle this on my own. I didnt want to leave the house, i was in a constant state of fear, i didnt want to drive my car, go to work, anything at all. I was scared to eat or swallow pills,for fear of choking. It was a horrible experience that kept me shaking almost every waking moment. Then i went on Zoloft after seeing a psychiatrist. He said i had post traumatic stress, due to the life threatening experience. It took only 4 days before i started seeing results. It is almost a year now that i have been on it, and i get scared that i may never get off of it, because the bleeding ( much smaller amounts ,Thank God) happen here and there still. I am still plagued by fear, but it is waaaaay more tolerable with the zoloft. I guess if i never had any bleeds again , i would not need the zoloft anymore. I Pray every day that we find a solution to the problem of hemoptysis ( for everyone that experiences it). It is a truely frightening experience when it gets bad. Someday maybe by the grace of God we will find the solution to the problem, until then i think i'll stay on the zoloft<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0"> ~ Diane ~ 38, cf, diabetes, b. cepacia
