CF and bone problems need some help.

I have had problems with my bones in my back becoming weaker. I actually had a compression fracture about four years ago and had surgury for it.
From what I understand it is from a combination of both mal nutrition when I was young, steroid medications such as
prednisone, and mal absorbtion.
My doctor put me on Fosamax for it.

My last scan indicated that my bones in my back were worse so he wanted me to ask my endocrinologist if I should try something different and suggested Forteo.

Now... I must admit that taking Fosamax was a hassle for me because you had to take it on an empty stomach and not eat for an hour... and be standing or sitting for that time.. and let's say that I was less than disiplined about taking it.
That is without a doubt more than likely another reason why improvement has not been gained.

From what I understand Forteo is actually an injection.
From what I read it also stimulates new bone growth and added mass unlike Fosamax does. I also read somewhere that it works better than Fosamax for people that have had steroids as a factor leading to the condition
All of these things are things that sound GREAT to me.
I don't mind injections at all.

But I also here that this med caused cancer in some rats and that major leg cramps, etc were side effects.

I was wondering if any CFers are taking this and how they react to it.
Any feedback would be appreciated!

Hey soxfan. Welcome to the site!

I had problems with Actonel and Bonvia so I had to go with Forteo. Other than having to remember the injection daily, Forteo was not bad at all. You can only take it for 2 yrs. From what I was told, once you use Forteo as therapy, then it will not be an option in the future. You will have to take something after you finish the 2 yr treatment to keep the rebuilt bone from going away. I am currently taking Reclast. I had Osteoporosis and Extremely High Fracture risk. It was due to extensive steroid use as a child. After the 2 yr treatment, I was upgraded to Osteopenia with Fracture Risk. I am almost at the normal range. So Forteo does work! Before I done Forteo, I had a lot of lower back pain that was unexplained. After finishing the Forteo treatment, my back pain doesnt seem to be as often or as bad. The side effects arent as bad as they were with the pills. One good thing is you can take the shot and lay down. You are not required to take it on an empty stomach or sit up after taking it. I would take it with my night time medicine and then go to bed. That way I could sleep through any side effects. The most common side effect I did have was bone pain, but it was mild compared to what I had with the pills. When I would get up the next morning, the bone pain would be gone. I think it was a good medicine option for me. If you have any more questions, feel free to PM me. <img src=""> Good luck.
