CF and cats?

Hi, I'm new here and was going through the one thread where people are introducing each other. I noticed that many people with CF have a cat, or in some cases, 2 or 3 of them. My 5 year old has CF. Her CF specialist is adamant that cats are the absolute worst pet she could have in terms of her health as they are terrible for anyone with lung issues. How come, then, do so many of you have cats?

Pets are going to be a doctor to doctor topic, really. Some doctors will tell you NO PETS AHHHHH. Others don't care. I've always had pets, lots of them. My docs always knew, and didn't care.

As long as the kid doesn't have an additional allergy to animal hair, there's no reason not to have a pet.

Just as an example, these are the pets I've had during my life: Dogs (and I've had primarily golden retrievers which are really furry dogs -- we've had as many as 5 or 6 in the house at a time), cats, guinea pigs, mice, hamsters, birds, fish, and I currently have a ferret. None of them have ever given me a problem.

Have you asked your doctor exactly why cats are bad? We currently have 8 cats and I always had cats growing up and never had a problem. In fact I believe studies have shown that children who grow up around animals have less issues with allergies and other problems (can't remember right now).

I agree that as long as your DD isn't allergic to cats then they shouldn't be a problem. Pets can be especially great for a child w/ a chronic illness. My brother had a pug and he LOVED that dog. When all he could do was sit on the couch and watch TV because he was so sick, the dog was always right there beside him.

Remember that our doctors are not perfect - they don't know everything and their advice is subject to their own opinions and biases. I have heard everything from "pets are the worst thing a person w/ CF could have" to "pets are great for CF". Personally, I believe that the benefits way outweigh the risks as long as you aren't allergic to them.

i find a doctors opinion on pets has more to do with their personal dislike and misconceptions of animals rather than for medical reasons. even tx patients can keep cats as long as common sense is used. our childrens hospital docs actually recommend pets! my doc has no problem with me having pets.
