I have 2 cats. My doctor wasnt crazy about me having them. I dont have allergies to cats. I think some drs have issues with cats because of the dander and having to clean out the litter box. My DH usually cleans out the litter box or another family member does it. If I do clean out the litter box, I wear a mask to make sure I dont inhale any dust or anything that may cause infections. I also wash my hands very, very well. I take them to the Vet monthly for baths and keep their shots and health updated. I also dont let my cats sleep on my bed. They can visit and hang out until bedtime, but they go out of the room when I go to bed. I dont want them to get in or around my face while I sleep. They are great stress relief when playing with them and petting them. They are also wonderful company when I am sick. I wouldnt go without having a cat. I think the benefits are better than possible risk.
Added: One cat is long haired tabby (looks like a maine coon), the other one is a short hair cat (actually the daughter of my other one). I have had the long haired cat since I was 10.
I also read the article about children exposed to animals didnt have as many allergies. It was a new study, I saw it on MSN a few weeks ago. I'm not too sure about it. I've heard when some ppl are exposed to allergies over and over (animals, food) they build up resistants and arent as allergic. However, some ppl because even worse. So, I wouldnt hold much to this study without more research being done.
