The researchers recommend all children with CF undergo assessment of bone mineral density and body composition early in life to target those who need preventive treatment.</end quote>

I can speak from experience on this one. My son had to undergo an 8 hour spine surgery to correct his problems. He was 15 when he started having a lot of back pain and his spine started curving. Since we had been told since birth that he has asthma, he was sent to a pulm. before doing the surgery, just to make sure he could handle it all. The Pulm we were sent to just happens to be considered the best CF doc in our area. He didn't waste any time testing him for CF. Of course we did two pos sweats and then DNA to confirm. We were considering not doing the surgery before seeing the CF doc. He told us it was imperative for my son's lung function. He said it would get worse and put too much pressure on his lungs.

The spine surgeon said if we had caught this probelm earlier, it most likely could have been corrected without surgery. I would absolutely recommend checking for this early on!!
