CF and Drinking

Hey all,I'm a 19 yr old male with CF, 75% lung function and Liver and Spleen problems. I have never eally been made known the dangers of drinking and CF. My next Doctor's appt. isn't for a few months, just had one a month ago. Anyway I'm a college student and I do enjoy a beer or two when I go to parties, but I don't drink at every party maybe once every two weeks. I dislike Hard-liqour and mainly stick to beer to be less damaging to the liver, but I still drink. Anyway I was wondering what you all have been told by your dotor's in relation to drinking and liver problems. My liver problem is just an enlarged liver which I take Actigall (Ursodil) for. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi there,Im an 18yr old CF Female with also 75% lung function Liver and spleen problems, and the problem with my liver is also just oversized.. and guess what I take for it <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif" border="0"> Ursodil. I have recently talked to my doctor about drinking.. and the only thing he was worried about was me getting addicted to it. I have been drinking (very little) for almost 3 years now.. Beer is actually pretty good for cleaning out the system once in a while. It should not be a problem unless you are getting plastered every weekend.. (I suggest not to do that.. that can only make things worse). Make sure to talk to ur doctor about it if you notice anything bad with the drinking.. My doctor just told me to do it in moderation and I would be fine. Feel free to email me at margret_huldrunard@hotmail.com if you´d like to chat..Cheers!

Yea well I had one weekend I'll never do again, ever. I was doing beer bongs and my friends were mixing rum in them without me knowing. I forget most of the night, but it was scary waking up the next day and having all these thoughts about its affects on my liver.

hello <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">21/female/CF/israel here. my liver's also enlarged, i take Ursolit for it. i'm not a drinker, except of an occasonal shot of tequila or a cocktail at a party, but it's very rare. i don't like alcohol verymuch, and i hate beer with a passion - which is exactly the reason why my alcohol intake is so low. at house parties where there's only beer, i skip it and go for OJ. which is good, because after the smallest drop of alcohol my liver blows up and gets very sensitive, so i better not touch the tummy area near it, because it hurts. my doctor doesn't like it when i tell her i drank alcohol - having liver disease present already, it's not exactly the smartest thing to be drinking alcohol. but as long as it's just a bit, it's not that bad <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

Hey Guys, When it comes to drinking, use the same common sense everyone else does. There is no specific reason not to drink "just because you have CF". However, do it responsibly, have your liver functions checked more often, make sure there isn't an alcohol warning on your meds, and don't get too drunk if your're breathing is labored. Taking enzymes makes no difference to alcohol. If you are taking insulin, however, skip your dose if you plan on drinking more than two drinks. Alcohol affects your blood sugar. Debbie22 yr old w/ CF
