cf and excercise

I've seen stuff on this site about excercise helping cf. We are big soccer fans, and hope to get Kaylee into it, like her big brother, mom, and aunt, and grandpa, (didn't have it for grandma!) Is this realistic? GO USA WORLD CUP! Thanks for the input.

Not only is this realistic & great, but it can be soooo much fun for everyone. Jazmine was on a soccer team for 3 years & it was a ball. My Mother came to 1 game & saw me cheering & carrying on so she looked at me & said....."Dont tell me you are one of THOSE soccer moms"! I smiled & said...."Yes I guess I am" and kept cheering. Sadly for me Jazz has not wanted to play the last 2 years (wheeps from disappointment). Its good exercise & family time together.......

It kinda depends on her health, doesn't it? I mean, if its something like she has to be on oxygen all the time, then it might not be realistic...

I know I used to have a dog who would play soccer with me... kinda... (I would kick the ball, and he would, um, bite it. Anyway I ran around a lot, which is the point) I got way more exercize playing with my dog than any sport I went out for, which mostly consisted of me standing around being bored. (Think Calvin and Hobbes =-) Anyway, I do think soccer's a great idea, but it certainly isn't the only one. If she doesn't want to go for soccer, mabe just to a family soccer thing in the park, or make up a game that involves lots of running around, or something.

That's great to hear, you guys. When K's mom started, they didn't have girls soccer,
she was 8 or 9. We had to fight the high school athletic dept to get girls soccer in high school. I hope Kaylee wants to play and has the stamina to do it. I'm a soccer mom/grandma in the worst way--and also a frustrated wanna-be soccer player. Too old for over-the hill teams--I want to but my body says no way!!

Youth Hockey (regardless of gender) > Youth Soccer...But yes, any organized sport activity you can get the kids into will be great for them exercise wise, and show them what team involvement, and what winning and losing is all about.

Terri,

Courtney plays softball, runs track and cross country, and many other sports. We just make sure her coachs know about her condition and that she carries an inhaler with her to every sporting event.

Terri,

I played tennis often and intensely, even on a competitive team, from the time I was about 10 until I was in my early 40's. Always used my albuterol before playing, and always carried it with me. The physical activity caused lots of coughing, which, for me, completely took the place of chest percussion. Don't know if that would be the case for others, but it worked for me. I absolutely know that the physical activity helped mazimize my lung capacity and boosted my immune system so that I didn't get sick very often. I wish I could still be so physically active! Anyway, I say go for it as long as possible.

Hi Terri,

I too agree that Kaylee should play soccer for as long as she wants, if that's what she likes. I played soccer from K-League through high school, and paddle tennis several times a week for years and feel it was a huge reason for keeping my lungs clear for so long. If she ends up not enjoying soccer anymore, I think someone should encourage her to get into something else...anything, tennis like Debi said, swimming, horseback riding, skiing, etc. So many sports and activites are super for keeping our lungs clear! Good luck.

Definitely! Keep other sports in mind too.. I did gymnastics, ballet, trampoline and swimming when I was really young (around Kaylee's age) then volleyball and cricket in school. I really think that my sport (and playing flute in the band) helped me stay healthy throughout school, and it was an excellent way to make friends!

Thank you all--so far Kaylee's health is pretty good so far. I'm glad to hear you confirm what I thought. I guess anything that helps your lungs work out is a good thing, huh?!

I take it when you refer to soccer, you are actually meaning football. Looking forward to the world cup, and for all you americans out there, I have a bet on the USA to at least get to the quarters.

And since the aussies have made it this time around, I may have a bet on them at times.

Uli, I dont need to tell you that Germany have a really good chance.

And I will bet against England, not because I dont like them, its just that you get better odds against them...maybe semi final for them

Brazil - Holland final thats my prediction

Anyways I know a 8year old with cf who plays, and it is really good for him. All that running around can replace the cpt for the day as well.

I love sports. I played soccer for a couple of years. But my real love is fastpitch softball. I played from 5 years old all the way up to and in college. I don't get to play much now with work and all. I loved every minute of playing. I was much better in sports than my brothers! I was always making all-stars etc.., so I pretty much played year round. I still play every now and then. I also was on the dance teams in school, and I took karate in college. Now, I walk 4 miles everyday.
I am way too hyperactive to sit still.

Its funny that you say this. The one & only soccr game that my husband went to for my daughter ended up being played in the pouring rain. It was one of the best tho. The kids thought it was great & I was so busy cheering that I didnt really notice how wet I got. My hubby on the otherhand sat under the umbrella like he was going to melt.......He wasnt impressed, but I was!

Brenco--your right--playing soccer in the rain is fun--for the players--not us parents! Kaylee's mom played goalie thru highschool. The girls loved sliding in the mud. It's not so much fun in the snow tho. Here in Iowa we can have some pretty cold spring games. Can't wait for the world cup!!! I got up special early in am when games were at 2:00am 4yrs ago. Also had games on in empty patient rooms at hospital when I worked. Soccer!

Soccer up into college, US football in high school, downhill skiing since age 6 or 7. Later whitewater kayaking, XC skiing, mtn. bikes, backpacking, etc. Now whitewater rafting, hiking, mc riding, ocean kayaking, snow skiing both XC and downhill, some snowshoeing. Not old enough for golf yet (I will take that up with shuffleboard).
