CF and Immune Deficiency

Two days ago, 01/8/2010, my great-grandson Isaiah had blood tests that were positive for CF. He will have a sweat test on Wednesday, 01/13/2010. He will be 2 years old on Tuesday, the 12th. The doctors have known all his life that he has a compromised immune system, but we were told it was because (1) he was born with Group B Strep and was in NICU on antibiotics his first 10 days, and (2) he has been on antibiotics most of his life for ear and sinus infections, pneumonia, h1n1, croup with strider, etc. He has a high white cell count, and there is something wrong with his "complements" which I don't completely understand yet. Is all this part of CF, or is his immune deficiency a separate matter altogether that we have to be concerned about?

As I understand it, CF kids have normal immune systems. It is possible that a lot of his issues ARE CF related, but he may have a weak immune system in addition to the CF.

I'm so sorry you are dealing with all this. Diagnosis is a really difficult time. I hope he'll get healthier with good care.

Sorry to hear about the diagnosis. Are they saying he is immune compromised because of the high white cell count? Has he always had this and that is why they are saying he is immune compromised? I would have said no, cfers are not immune compromised until recently. I had asked my children's cf doctor is they could join the local swim team that swims in a lake. His answer was "no, they can't because they are immune compromised." I had never heard that term used before in a child with cf. He was specifically relating to the fact that cf kids can easily get sick from bacteria in the water. Sharon, mom of Sophia, 8 and Jack, 6 both with cf, Grant, 11 months no cf

Thank you for your input. I already know that I will be spending a lot of time in this forum during this difficult time. As I understand it now, the immune deficiency and CF are separate issues. There are missing or defective "complements" of his immune system that characterize the deficiency. My granddaughter said he will be under the care of a pulmonologist, an immunologist, and an allergy specialist, and he has been referred to a CFF accreditied care center. Hopefully, with their help, he will live a long and full life.
