My apologies if this information seems too clinical. Let me start by saying that whenever there's a type of cancer in the family, a person who is at risk should ALWAYS be sure to get cancer screenings early on. Early detection of cancer, particularly pancreatic cancer is a potentially LIFE SAVING thing.
That being said, there IS an increased risk of developing pancreatic caner in CARRIERS of the gene mutation that causes CF. The gene that causes pancreatitis is coded for on the same chromosome as cystic fibrosis. That's why CARRIERS are prone to developing pancreatic cancer. CF patients themselves, especially those who have pancreatitis in addition to CF are more likely to develop pancreatic cancer.
Researchers at the Mayo Clinic point out that the overall risk is "still small."
Bottom line, be proactive and get screening as appropriate, but don't lose sleep over it <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">
