CF and Pancreatic Cancer

My husband's mom died of pancreatic cancer also.

I read somewhere (I don't recall the source) that CFers have an increased chance of developing pancreatic & colon cancer. Like I said, I don't remember where I read this at, so I don't know how accurate the statement is.

So, based on what Lauren's shared, shouldn't families with a history of pancreatic cancer be screened for the cf gene prior to having children? I know a lot of our parents (and parents of cfers) never even thought about the possibility of being carriers of cf, but perhaps if this correlation were more well known, people would think to screen themselves prior to having babies (or their doctors, at least, should recommend a screening if they know their patient has pancreatic cancer in the family)... just a thought.

Good point Wheezie, in our case however we didnt even know what CF was when Garran was diagnosed. No one in our family had ever had it on either side. They didnt do prenatal screening at that time. They conveniently started that next year. So maybe now that research has shown a correlation they will begin this as well.
