This can be a complicated issue to work. Let me state the obvious. She's got several issues to work:

1.Detoxifying from alcohol

2. Getting to surgery without misusing her meds or alcohol so much that her surgery or recovery is complicated by that.

3. Finding good pain management (without misusing pain meds or using alcohol) during recovery from surgery

4 Detoxifying from the pain meds after surgical pain is gone

5. After she is detoxified from pain meds, having her pain reevaluated and coming up with a pain management program that will not set her up for abuse again.

I'm not at all sure that the order of things is as I've listed here.

I think she needs to talk to her doctors and find out what process they recommend for her to end up with her endometriotus (sp) situtation resolved surgically and clean and sober. I could see that it would be entirely possible that they would want her to wait on her detox until after the surgery - and there is the possibility that they would want her to recover from surgery and have her pain meds monitored in an inpatient (nursing home?) setting.

As far as doing nebs and stuff as a patient in an alcohol/drug rehab or pain program, I think you can find places that do that (at least you can in the Boston are so I am assuming that you can there too).

Good luck to her - and to you...

Thanks everyone for the replies. I knew you guys would have some good input.

Lisa, Darcey is working closely with her doctors. In fact, they won't release her from the hospital until she has a plan in place. Otherwise they would have released her yesterday. I assume that means that they are all for her going ahead with the rehab and surgery concurrently.

I'm passing along all of this info to my mom and sis. Thanks again for your input!

The only suggestion I can think of is that the next time you go to the hospital ask to speak to a social worker and they may be able to help hook you up with the right rehab center for your sister.

Good luck!!
