Like everyone else said, I always left 5 or 10 minute early and went to the office (but I lived in a small town, didnt take more than 5 minutes to get to the office at my elementary or middle school... junior high and high school I just did everything myself).

I actually liked being able to leave early b/c I normally got to the lunch room early too (honestly made me feel a little special). But I didnt have to wait in line at all for medicines and we went to the secretary, and not the nurse (I dont think they were full time maybe). Also in grade school I used to help a mentally handicapped boy get his meds, and it somewhat made me feel good for helping him. When I got to middle school, another boy with juvenille diabetes would go get his blood sugars checked at the same time so we normally got to walk together then too.

I dont remember having problems eating back then, I pretty much ate like a horse until I got to college so I was always ravenous by lunch time(and by the time I got home). I also just brought my own snacks and ate them whenever I wanted (fruit snacks and such). Everyone was always jealous of my awesome lunches my mom made me, I always had something hot in the winter which was perfect when feeling cold.Normally stole other parts of people lunches too haha.

One of my favorite meals in high school was two chicken cordon blues and mozzarilla sticks and a large root beer for lunch (at Arbys), and still would be hungry enough to eat my friends left over fries (or order my own curly fries) or left over chicken strips there. It was pretty awsome b/c at Arby's (again, small town) they would already have my chicken and cheese sticks in the fryer before I got there so by the time I ordered it was ready and still piping hot (so I had enough time to eat it all b/c you have to race, I mean drive, back to school)... talk about service!

Actually this question brought up good memories, I always had good relationships with all the secretarys and the sweet lunches I got also makes me feel pretty dang lucky at how helpful and awesome my mom was.

Sorry so long, again, the good memories.

My mother just "rethought" the way I hate. She would feed me a very homeade stick to you ribs breakfast(atleast 600+ cals in one meal) Then I would bring lunch, snacks, and drinks like boost. We talked to my teachers and it was kind of just an understood that I was allowed to eat whenever I wanted during class. My mom thought that socializing/normal life was as important as health. When I would get home from school I would have a "2nd lunch". We would eat dinner around 6 or 7 and it would also be great and she also encouraged snacking. So we never placed much importance on the school lunch anyways. We just packed minimal, fast eaten foods with as many cals as possible. It took a little while to get used too but even to this day I tend to eat this way.

I eat around 4-5 largish meals a day but from the times of 11-2 I am never really hungry from something like a traditional lunch. I will normally eat something like a yogart, drink a boost, and then have an apple. Then around 2/3 Ill actually be hungry for lunch. I also wanna say that I am a slow eater too. I always take around an hour to eat my food, so during school I never really got a chance to finish if I was hungry anyways.

As for pills I would either go to the office or as I got older I would bring enough for lunch in my pocket and go take them in the bathroom.

Thanks again to all for your replies. We are oing to have a meeting at the school with our clinic nurse present and devise a program that will hopefully be a bit more suitable to our childs needs. I will keep you posted on the outcome, for future reference, and for other families that may fall into the same footsteps.

Thanks again everyone <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

Sorry this is probably late but I would definately say she needs to be eating with the kids. My oldest who is 10 had the same problem. He really took a long time to eat and at school they only have 20 mins alloted for lunch. They suggested having him be in the office eating so then he would have more time b/c after lunch they go right to recess. I didn't want him to eat alone without his friends. He used to really feel that he was a little different b/c he has to go get his meds before lunch but as he has gotten older it has gotten better.

He eats school lunch and knows that he has a very short time. He leaves his classroom a little before lunch and gets his enzymes and then meets his class in the lunch line. Sometimes he doesn't eat much but we always make sure that when he gets home in the afternoon he gets a snack and then he has dinner. I wouldn't want your child to feel secluded. Hope this helps./
