I am so sick of this nasty smelling gas, and a lot of it. WHY is it like this. AND I am so sensitive on the subject and my mother in law has a big mouth!! i'm about to scream at her. I've told her I can't help it its apart of my disease but she tells me I smell like a sewer all the time. And that im rancid!! I don't know what to do :( my husband works out of town so he can't really help.

I assume that you are on the right dosis of enzymes but still have that problem?
What helped a lot with our daughter is "Simbioflor 1".
But I dont know if its available in the States.

It contains "enterococcus faecalis" bacteria and rebuilds the healthy bacterial flora in the intestines.

I had this problem for many years but did not realize I was able to help control it somewhat. I realized that perhaps my system just couldn't digest certain things so I began to pay attention to what I had eaten when my stomach was bothering me. Bread was the culprit. I am a pretzel and bagel lover so this was very hard to cut, but the relief has been well worth the sacrifice. I still have the smelly stools a lot of the time, but not the gas. I am incredibly sensitive on the topic myself.

I would suggest that you discuss with your CF Specialist, Bacterial Overgrowth & Stool Build Up in the Colon. These issues are very "curable".

Hi,I had the same problem until I went gluten free. Now my son and I are doing great. If you decide to go gluten free--really, try it for a week--there are symptoms that happen while your body is withdrawing from wheat. There may be ringing in your ears--that was mine--but it was worth it. I can go out in public!! Also, some make up and creams have wheat in them too--who knew! Take care, and good luck.Karen

I cut out milk, fast food, foods mainly with high saturated fat and switched my fat mostly to monounsaturated fat like avocados. Helped so much with the gas, better then enzymes. The problem is the fat is hard to digest for normal people like a greasy hamburger, makes it even harder on us. Cutting the bad, high in bad fat out and replace with healthy fat is the solution. I have no problems digesting a ton of olive oil but other bad oils, I do.

I too had ( have) the same issues,. 50% of it is to do with your enzymes doses and how food is affecting you, and the other 50% is antibiotic use trashing the flora in our gut.

I stay away from heavy meats, high fat foods, no fast food, only little pizza/ only a little at a time! But Milk, dairy, wheat, gluten, bread, doesn't upset me, its just anything with fat. I have found being a vegetarian helps a WHOLE LOT, I don't eat beef, pork, fish, but I occasionally eat little turkey or chicken, because I have to keep my weight up, :(

I also eat ALOT of fat free yogurt, chobani , greek, yogurt drinks, and take probiotics supplement daily, which is tremendous benefit, and I have virtually zero CF -related farting. (FART)

As for your mother-law, I can't blame her for proclaiming you and CFer's in general are a living sewer (NOSEPICK) yes even though you 'can't help it' per say, you can control it alot better.

Try pass it away from her or somewhere in the bathroom, and have a can of Lysol at the ready, until you figure things out, or if you want drive her insane, do nothing and maybe she'll leave. (FART)

Can you control it, so that you can leave the room before it sneaks out?

She just makes comments on how loud it is and says "WELL im glad you weren't in here when you did that" shes living in MY house and pays no rent or bills. This is just one thing amongst a ton of inappropriate things she says. She even told my husband that hes getting the short end of our marriage.

Hmm, looks like there is a deeper problem behind that.
Is your husband supporting you? Is there a chance that she might look for her own place?
In any case I would talk to her and tell her how much she is hurting you with comments like this. Your life is difficult enough without somebody putting salt into your wounds!

Sounds like you and the hubby need to have good long talk about his mom. And if she can't keep her comments to herself she needs to find another place to live. You shouldn't have to put up with that in your own home. Also consider speaking to your doctor as others have suggested. I don't seem to have as much gas when I cut back on dairy. Goodluck!

Yeah, I'm generally gas-free these days, though that took a lot of experimenting to find out what foods to avoid. I don't want to miss out on calories, you know. And my bowel movements still turn the walls brown, but at least I'm not gassing my coworkers anymore.
