Are women with CF more prone to gestational diabetes?

Just curious...I'm 30 w/ CF, 27 weeks pregnant and my glucose came back high on 2 initial tests, so now I have to do the 3-hour fasting test and cut back on my carbs. I know that a lot of the time the 3hr fasting test comes back normal, but I didn't know if CF played any part?

For whatever it's worth, I exercise every day and have gained 9 lbs so far.

Thanks for any thoughts...

One of my old CF doctors did extensive studies on CF women and gestational diabetes. He basically found that about 50% of CF women develop GD during their pregnancy. Then about 50% of them continue to have CFRD following the birth of the child.

I had a borderline high 1-hour glucose test during my pregnancy, so I did the 3-hour GTT. The 3-hour ended up being normal to my surprise...and I have not yet developed CFRD.

Good luck on the 3-hour test!

I had gestational...and ended up being diagnosed with CFRD six months after my daughter was born. I didnt watch my diet or take any meds for it...doc just kept an eye on it...and I ended up being induced a little more than 3 weeks early.
Good Luck to you!

Thanks ladies! I'm trying my best not to worry about it unless I fail the 3 hour test, but it's quite the challenge for me to cut back on sugar and carbs...especially during all these Superbowl parties <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

Haley & Dea - Where you did have it, how big were your babies?

Fingers are crossed - I'll let you know how it goes.

I live in Illinois, but at the time I was seeing a CF doctor at St.John's Mercy Medical in St.Louis, MO. So when I became pregnant my perinatologist was there also...so that is where my daughter was born. She was 6 lbs. when she was born.

just FYI - I don't know that induction for babies of CFRD mothers is common practice. This is just one of many reasons it's important to have your cf doc and OB communicating since the OB would assume it's gestational diabetes when in actuality it resembles more CFRD. Diet changes for example may not be necessary. I'd wait until you fail the 3 hr and then start researching the heck of out of the subject and perhaps talk with a leading cf doc on the subject.
