CF & Gestational Diabetes

just FYI - I don't know that induction for babies of CFRD mothers is common practice. This is just one of many reasons it's important to have your cf doc and OB communicating since the OB would assume it's gestational diabetes when in actuality it resembles more CFRD. Diet changes for example may not be necessary. I'd wait until you fail the 3 hr and then start researching the heck of out of the subject and perhaps talk with a leading cf doc on the subject.

I found out I had gestational diabetes around week 9/10 of my pregnancy. I had passed my previous glucose tests before getting pregnant. I noticed I was getting really thirsty for a couple days and borrowed my husbands meter and discovered it.

You really shouldn't change your diet at all. I quit eating carbs for about 2 weeks before I could get in (I was scared I would hurt the baby since I was so early) and dropped about 10-15 lbs (I've never had problems with my weight being low...my docs always joke that I'm the pudgy CFer). I got put on insulin right away. I had to go on meal plans, but they pretty much allowed me to eat what I needed to in order to start gaining weight except for juice/pop.

According to my high risk OB, they really don't like to induce people with diabetes unless the babies are getting too big because lung maturity can be slowed down from the diabetes. I had an amnio at 37 weeks and my levels were slightly low to induce (my lungs didn't handle the pregnancy well) so we waited until 38 weeks. Sam was 6 lbs 9 ounces.

Hope this helps! Good luck!

I actually wasnt induced due to the gestational diabetes...sorry if I made that unclear. I had ultrasounds done once a month and my daughter was developed fully and they didnt foresee any complications. When I went in for my regular check up, I was already dilated to 2 and my doctor was going to be out of town for 2 weeks and did not want me going into labor while he was gone.

Good news - I passed my 3hr test with flying colors!! All 4 of my levels were super low and some were even below normal, go figure!

The bad news is that I seemed to have caught some "virus" 2 weeks ago and as a result my PFTs plummeted, I'm on IVs, and my cervix has shortened, so I'm on "restricted activity" for now. But I'm not complaining, I'm just so psyched that I don't have DG <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

Thanks again for all the helpful comments!
