Hi My names Billy. I was diagnosed when I was 16, just a mild case, poor lung function from 16 years of not being treated. Anyway, it took until I was 21 to get over my denial and actually starting care of myself. Then my pancreas went wonky and I started taking enzymes. So, I was hoping anyone could answer a question of mine. I'm sort of a rookie when it comes to daily CF related issues.

My question is related to enzymes. Hypothetically, say, you wanted to lose weight, could you just not take your enzymes? Lets say you wanted a Milkyway but didn't want the calorie intake, would you just not take enzymes?

Hi Billy,
Welcome to the forum.

I was also one who had more issues with my pancreas than my lungs.
Technically, to loose weight would not be to stop taking enzymes. However, you can loose weight and still take enzymes.

The enzymes are used to absorb nutrients as well as properly digest foods. If you are overweight, or can easily gain weight, but you eat a lot to do so, then your body is still absorbing what you eat, but still not as efficient as a person with no enzyme issues. With the proper enzymes, and proper diet, you can lose weight in a healthy rate (typically 2.5 kg per week), and not malnurish your body.
Also, if you decide not to take enzymes, it would be recommended to take water-soluble vitamin supplements, and avoid hard-to-digest foods...however, this is based on my opinion and personal experience.
In regards to the Milkyway question, it is a case-by-case situation, but I personally didn't take enzymes with snacks, including candy bars, but I did with major meals.
I hope that's a start to answer your question.

Welcome Billy!

Just as Fred said, enzymes help us absorb nutrients. So if you want to drop a few pounds then cut back on high calorie snacks. Pretty much like a "normal" person would loose weight. Not taking enzymes opens up a whole can of digestive issues and those are never fun! Also like Fred, when it comes to eating a Milkway or Snickers I won't take enzymes, but for other higher fat and calorie snacks I make sure I do. I know what goes through me and what doesn't so I can gage myself, but I have been PI since I was born and have had 22 years to figure it out

It depends what food you eat and how bad your pancreas is. Enzymes digest protein, fat and complex starch, so if you eat a chocolate without enzymes you wont absorb the fat, protein and starch in it, but you will absorb the simple sugars and candy is high is sugar so you don't 'cancel out' the entire chocolate. Sugar gets broken down earlier in your digestive system before the pancreas, as i understand, and thats why if you have diabetes your sugar can still spike even if u skipped the enzymes. So skipping enzymes doesnt totally rule out the food you eat, but it does stop you absorbing major food groups and this will = losing weight. Skipping enzymes to lose weight is probably not the healthiest way to go about it, as you can develop issues like malabsorbtion-pains/cramps (from undigested fat), bowel blockages and a whole lot of other problems.
