CF Patients & Nursing Home Placement

Robert & I watched a show today that got me thinking. Has anyone been or know of any CFers who have been placed in Nursing Homes or Adult Homes because they have no one who is able to care for them at home.

IF a CFer were to be placed in a Nursing Home even for a short term I would think it would be highly dangerous due to the staph & other bacterias that run amock.

Not to mention that I am sure Nursing Homes dont have the proper staffing, meds or knowledge needed for adequate CF care. They would be shipped to a hospital for an exacerbation, but daily maintenance I doubt would be properly administered.

I am just in a curious state.....

Melissa, I have never been in a nursing home, thank goodness. But I was ALMOST forced into one by my insurance. I had been admitted for a few days of antibiotics and then when I was well enough, my doc wanted to send me home on home IVs. This is a pretty typical situation for a CFer. But my insurance claimed that if I was sick enough to need IVs, I needed to be monitored. And the docs felt I wasn't sick ENOUGH to stay in the hospital. The insurance wouldn't authorize the prescription IV meds to be used in the home. They would only pay for them if I went into a nursing home. My nurse called around for almost 3 days (they let me stay in the hospital thank goodness) and found a home IV pharmacy that was willing to "risk" not being reimbursed by my insurance company. They agreed to do battle with them, basically.

Oh and in case you were wondering, my insurance at the time was Medicare. It was the changes in Medicare Part D (the prescription drug program) that caused all these problems.

I spent lots of time in a nursing home at the end of the lives of both of my parents - which was just before my diagnosis which was precipitated by my first ever sputum sample which showed pseudomonas - which I thought I caught at the nursing home! ok, so I look back and shudder thinking about all of the people there who were sick and coughing coughing coughing while I was wandering around, visiting Mom and Dad and other people who lived there.

This is interesting a few yr ago i was really sick the hospital wanted to place me in a nursing home for a temp option . But the ones that they checked with did not feel like they were able to take a cf patient in there care . So i got to stay in the hospital for another few week s instead of going in to a nursing home. I do beleave that there is places for cf patients but i have no idea were . Myself i would never want to go in to a home i know what happens in those places and i know how dirty they are as well . I know that i have a weight issue being small now wow you know i would be about 50 lb if i lived in one of those places lol any way i there are people that do need these places but at this time i have my mom and ill let her take care of me .. I do beleave that they do need to teach the staff of nursing homes etc for cystic fibrosis so that they will be ready if a cf patient would need to go in to the place fcr long term or perm

just my thought s
