I'm actually surprised this is not a top-ten topic!
It seems most CF'rs on this site are not aware that there is a chemical reaction between the salty sweat and types of metals in the jewelry, and accessories we put on! ( I connected this with my skin irritating, and basic chemestry)
I consider this a pertinent piece of information for those who plan to buy wedding rings; want, or need a watch, or when their "better half", etc. is looking for a Christmas gift, or something for them to wear!!
What I have found out so far, the following are materials that have poor reaction to the salty skin:
Leather-turns white and eventually breaks off, or becomes a "chew-toy" for the dog! (I've lost a lot of leather belts that way!)
Rubber- Tends to turn white, and collect the salt in crystals, and eventually weakens and breaks.
Aluminum- one of the lighter metals, and seemingly easy to react to the salt, causing irritation and burning of the skin.
Copper (or Bronze- a copper alloy)- turns a greenish color with the salt, and causes black coloring on the skin.
Silver- Also, when used as plated, will eventually come off from the reaction to salt, leaving whatever alloy (bronze, aluminum) to react to the salty sweat.
Pure Silver- probably cause discoloring, and may be another metal that will cause a reaction with the skin--also very expensive!
These are the few materials I found that don't react to the salty skin:
Gold of 18K or more--In general, gold does not rust, and is frequently used as a plating for electronic devices, like stereo terminals! It is also used in Electronics for Microcomputers, due to it's excellent conduction.
Stainless (or surgical) Steel-- another metal which can be immersed in water, and, when used as a diving watch, doesn't rust or errode when directly in salty waters! However, like so, the stainless steel needs to have the salt washed off from a diver's watch, and therefore, anything else, (necklaces, earrings) that is stainless steel won't rust or errode if rinsed in tap water.
Platinum-- More expensive than both Gold and Stainless Steel, but also doesn't have the property which causes discoloring, and irritation to the skin. Platinum can also be rinsed in tap water, to keep it's luster!!
Any additional comments, etc., is greatly welcome!
