cf surf event

Hi,
I would like to hear from anyone whose child has attended a cf surf event; I am considering this in the near future for my son. The only reason I am hesitant is because of the exposure to other cfers and cross-contamination; thusfar, knock on wood, he only cultures staph aureus. I have spoken to his doc, etc. and they share the same concerns. I have read through all the info i.e. precautions taken, release forms, etc.; I would like to also hear from some parents. ANY info would be appreciated!
Many thanks,
Kathy

I would be careful to stay away from other cfers, do they do something to identify the cf patients with a tshirt or something so you know who to stay away from? As long as you are able to keep a reasonable distance from the other cfers I think you would be ok. I've been to seminars and things of the sort and everyone is careful to keep a distance and I've never gotten anything from it. Being outside is a plus for that.
The surfing would be great for cfers though, the salt air does the same thing as a treatment of HTS. In fact that's where the research and development started for the HTS. Drs in Australia noticed that thier patients who surf and spend a lot of time in and around the ocean always seemed to do better with lung function. They started researching it and found the salt air forces the body to send lots of fluids into the lungs thinning the mucus and allowing it to be coughed up and out.

Um,,,Have you seen Shark Week? LOL!

Seriously though, I've heard of these camps and they sound like a great opportunity for CFers! The one I heard of traveled up the East Coast and offered camps in many locations throughout the year. It sounded like the staff was quite knowledgible about cross infection and keeping the campers safe.

Hi,

The CF Surf Events are Awesome.. We Live in Cali and went to one about a month ago. You cant attend if you have MRSA or B Cecpecia. All the kids had wet suits and also had to put red t-shirts over them to identify themselves as having CF. At ours the paitents have to be over I believe 7 to actually surf. And all had own boards and instructors that were provided.. It was sponsored by the CFF and they have many through out the year. I have some great pictures if you want to see on Facebook, you can add me if you have it karen Puskas. Its outside and parents are there and kids at ages old enough to surf should all know the 3 foot rule anyways..

Do they just give you some plain tshirt that identifies you as a cfer or do they have a good design for the shirt that at some point you would wear again. They could have a really neat design shirt, I am a sucker for a cool freebie tshirt like that lol that's part of the reason I want to donate blood, for the free tshirt. They have some cool ones these days!

hi,
thanks to everyone who replied <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">
i contacted bobby serna @ mauli ola, the sponsor, had a very candid dialogue with him about my concerns and also posted on a few other sites.
they really want this program to be a success and, thus, are taking every step to ensure this.
we are not 100% decided yet and have to firm up accomodations, etc., but i am definitely more at ease about my son participating.
