CF Technology

I'm a student of the University of Virginia Biomedical Engineering Department, and as part of a class project, my friends and I have to come up with a solution for a medical issue or problem. Well, we chose Cystis Fibrosis to work on, just for this semester for our grades, but after reading and learning a lot about CF, I have become really interested in actually being useful(helpful) in anyway that I can. Basically , our task is to come up with a new device, improve a device or do something to help CF patients. We have a limited budget for the class project so my group members and I are trying to come up with something very affordable but also effective. However, should we come up with something really concrete, we will be allowed to extend more academic and research time for the project.
Some of the things we came up with were,
making a cheaper vest,
coming up with some sort of pancreas pump, (like an insulin pump)so CF patients don't have to physically take too many pills all the time.

So far these are the two we are seriously considering, so please , if you have any suggestions, let me know. Even if we cannot work on them, I will do my best to forward them to some of the bigger more professional Bioengineering companies, some of which we have access to, as part of the class project. i am currently working on a website, so you can actuall see some of the stuff we are doing. Thanks so much just for reading all this. and please do make any suggestions

a cheaper vest would be great.
also a smaller or at least lighter vest would be really nice. that thing gets really heavy really fast when you have to tote it around somewhere when traveling

Alternatives to the Vest. I currently use an acapella. There's also a flutter. These devices cause some alternating backpressure to help loosen up mucus so we can cough it out. Something or some sort of sort of device we can attach to our nebulizer air pumps that will help with that recriprocating airway pressure to loosen mucus might be an alternative between the under $100 plastic devices and the $15000 Vest. Currently using the acapella requires you to forcibly blow which can get pretty tiring - though the pressure required is somewhat adjustable. I don't know if such a thing would be effective, but I've always wondered why there isn't some middle -ground in the price range at least. Good luck with the engineering project! I started out in BioMedical Engineering, but switched into Aerospace once I got to the part where I had to pith frogs. ;-) ~Juliet

thx so much Jamie and Juliet, so I was wondering, is it the vest that's kinda bulky to carry around, or is is jus the whole thing (with the pump as well). Plus what do you think about the idea of us coming up with some sort of pancreatic pump. I was reading about the progressive pancreatic failure in CF patients and the stress in taking too many pills at a given time to help with supplement the minimal enzyme production. So my friends and I were thinking of something like an insulin pump which could be somewhat attached to the patient, so then one wouldn't have to take too many pills at a given time. Also my group is seriously looking a the acapella thing, thanks for those suggestions, we'll try to work around them!!!
