Transplants freak me out. It absolutely, totally freaks me out at the thought of having some dead persons organ in your body functioning and keeping you alive. Beyond heebie geebie to me. I'm an organ donor so when I die they will pick me clean, but damn...


My goal is to not get bad enough for a transplant. If I had transplanted lungs, every minute of the day I would think about those lungs, who they came from, what they were like, etc etc etc

ALL I COULD THINK OF WAS FRAKENSTEIN LOL

I would guess, not being a tx receipiant yet, that you enjoy the breathing so much you "forgot" some of the how/why/who is responsible. Kind of like having a baby. The memories of pain are there, but they become a bit blurred with time & happiness!

On the abstract of the study, it is wirtten: "A prospective, randomized trial is needed to clarify whether and when patients derive a survival and quality-of-life benefit from lung transplantation."

So it kind of follows in line with the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine response posted above.

The abstract also says: "Five patients had a significant estimated benefit, 315 patients had a significant risk of harm, 76 patients had an insignificant benefit, and 118 patients had an insignificant risk of harm associated with lung transplantation."

What does "Risk of harm" mean? Does that mean the transplant patients got worse after the transplant? If I am reading it right, a significant number of children are having less of a chance of survival than if they had not had the transplant in the first place. If there is a significant risk of decreased life span after a transplant, then I can see what Dr. Liou is saying.
