CF Tx Vs Non CF Tx

I've heard that the survial rate post TX is much higher for ppl with CF mainly because we are very regimented in our ways and most of us are compliant to the medications needed to be taken post TX
Because most othe candidates for TX include smokers w/ emphazema and ppl with other disorders none of which are genetic. so we really have a heads up.
does anyone know if a study was ever done on CF vs non Cf post TX life expectancy.
i go for my evaluation for TX soon and was trying to sort things out
Thanks
Mike

Hey Mike-
I don't know numbers exactly...but I know for my particular center in New Orleans (which is now temporarily located in Baton Rouge), the success rate for CF is greatly higher than those with other illnesses. From what I can remember its like a 95% rate for 1 year post and I believe like 82% for five years. Something like that. I can get you numbers if you would like me too. But I have heard that as well that CF transplant patients fare better than others. What is your fev1, where are you getting listed, do you have any other questions regarding the transplant process?

Another reason statistics show that CF tx survive longer is... that we get a double lung tx where as in other deseases the recipiant might only get a single lung tx. In their cases.. they only have one fresh new lung free from desease and their old lung still might not be real good. CF'ers HAVE to get a double lung.. if not the old lung will continue to get infected. I'm sure there are other reasons too but that I think is the main one.

I think one other reason that cfer's fair better is that we get them (on average) at a younger age than those with other illnesses. A younger person can "bounce back" quicker than an older one I think. Anyway, I remember my doc mentioning that once when I was pre-tx.

the scary thing is i have this meeting with them if they approve me ill be very happy but also in the back of my mind i keep thinking do have a few more years left in these lungs now or no. ::Sigh:: i gues thats why they give you a social worker there

Mike,
Yes, I was diagnosed later in life then alot of other cf'ers. I was 15 at the time. I was doing fairly "normal" health wise till in my late 20's. Then after being listed for 33 months I got tx'd in 1996.
