CFer around a new baby

Do newborns fit into the category of "immunocompromised people who we can get sick" as their immune systems haven't had time to develop? I ask because my cousin is supposed to have her baby next week and I would really like to be waiting at the hospital with the rest of my family. The last thing I want to do is get the baby sick, though, and I feel that I should give my cousin a heads up if I won't be there. As far as I'm concerned, I'm not particularly worried about hanging around the hospital...worst comes to worst I'll wear a mask. I just really really want to be there when my new "nephew" gets here!

I think that if you culture normal Cf stuff, and not b. cepacia, you should be fine -- if anyone is worried, wear a mask while you hold the baby. Congrats, nothing is as amazing as seeing a brand new little person!!!!

if the baby is born healthy, you wont have a problem...a baby still has the birth mothers antibodies to fight off infection....when my son was born this past year I had psuedemonas and some other health issues and he was never sick...in fact it ended up being the other way around...he would get a cold then I did even worse

It should be perfectly fine. They don't really fit the description of "immunocompromised". Plus, a lot of CF women have their own babies.

Yep like Leah said, lots of CF women have babies and we're never told not to be around them. Healthy newborns don't get sick with CF bugs.

MRSA does not count as 'a normal cf bug.' If you culture MRSA I think you should reconsider contact with the baby for a couple weeks. Even then make sure to wash your hands before you hold the baby.
