CFRD Questions

A little backstory--My brother Travis is in the hospital right now. He has pneumonia and his FEV1 was at 48%. It's normally around 70%. Anyways, for some reason today the nurses took his blood sugars. They were 283. That was after he ate lunch today. Well he just called me (it's about 9:30 PM here)and they took it again. This time they were 303. I asked him if the doctor mentioned anything about CFRD. Travis has never heard of it. In fact he doesn't know much about CF besides the fact that he has it, it sucks, and he has to take a lot of meds. He said the doctor said something about CFRD to him after she saw the BS #s. He of course doesn't remember what she said. He's 19 by the way.

Anyways my questions are: are those numbers really bad?
If he does have it, what might he have to add to his treatment regimn? Does it take a toll on your lung health? I've read through some past threads but i don't understand alot of them since i haven't dealt with CFRD personnally.

My son Dan has CFRD. It took them awhile to diagnose it, several glucose tests. Your brothers numbers are high, but there are some reasons that could explain it. It is possible that he having an infection is making his blood sugars run high. Also when Dan got put on steroids to help his infection clear up the last time he was in the hosp, his sugars went through the roof.

I would bet now that his numbers are high, they will keep an eye on it to see if they continue to be high.

Yes those numbers are high. Like the last poster mentioned, if he is on steroids that may have something to do with it. I've had diabetes since i was 15 and stress and infection do make my blood sugars go higher. The true indicators of diabetes are, increased thirst, hunger , weight loss and fatigue. Has he been experiencing any of those before the hospitalization? If he has diabetes, he wil most likely have to go on insulin shots. it sounds scary at first, but becomes routine pretty quickly. He will feel much better with his blood sugars under control and probably be able to gain some weight. I am figuring they will have him do a an oral glucose tolerance test to determine if he is diabetic at some point. They will have him fast the night before and the drink this sugary stuff and check his blood sugars every hour or so to see if he is making his own insulin or enough of it.

I don't think he's on any steriods right now. They checked his BS again last night a few hours after he ate. His # was 352, so they gave him an insulin shot last night. This morning they took checked his BS again and it was 125. This was after about 12 hours of not eating and the shot. He doesn't really gain much weight, but his weight has stayed pretty much the same for the past few years. He usually looses a few pounds when he' sick, but he always gains it back. He's 5'4" and weighs 135 lbs. He did say that he is always thirsty and he urinates alot.
