Help! yesterday got out of the hospital after an infection and the endcrinologist says I should be able to eat what I want. He Adjusted my Lantus and gave me a new sliding scale to use. I was given Epidra short acting insulin in the hospital, but can only get Novalog for home because of insurance. Yesterday I had good sugars, today they are all over 200-400. As CFer's we got to snack. But what do I eat??? the sliding scale is not working, and I was told to give insulin at meals. I only had my crackers and yogurt and cheese for a snack. Had a really good high protein lunch. At dinner my BS was 414!!!!!!
What do you all do out there. What works for you? This up down thing is making me feel worse than I already do.
They gave me Diabetic boost in the hospital but of course I cant get that here at home.

Yikes 414 is a tab bit too high! I am not on the sort acting insulin where you take a shot with each meal, So i am not too familiar with that routine but i can help with some suggestions....Iam on a long acting (Humulin NPH) and i also take a few units of Humulin Regular at dinner time to counteract any highs from din din. I can tell you that eating protein (and exercise), will help to lower your blood sugar a bit. Eating Carbs when my blood sugar is on the high side is a no no for me, I usually will stick to scrambled eggs, cheese, cotage cheese, turkey, chicken, Tunafish, sardines, anything that does not have any real amount of carbs. Getting on a treadmill with high sugars will help to get it down a bit also.... Well actually any type of exercise will help to lower the blood sugar. I hope you can get things in order soon with your blood sugars. Did you just have an embolization? Did i just read that in a previous post? I had 3 of them ( my third last Oct.) and it took a while for my blood sugars to get back to normal after all the stress that put on me. You could be reacting to the stress of that experience.... I hope you feel better soon <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

Yes I did have 3 vessels embolized. Have you ever had your feet swell as well. I am hoping this is also because of all the stuff I just went thru. On Tobramycin IV, Prednisone, the diabetes. Oh Boy. Measured my feet tonit and going to see what they look like tomorrow and call my doc.
Thanks for the input.

Hey there,

A few ideas for you - are you POSITIVE that your testing finger was clean before you tested your sugars. Sometimes if you do not wipe with alcohol, clean your hands with soap and water OR use the antibacterial hand cleaner remnants of food on your fingers can cause a really bizarre high. I ask that because I am wondering if you experienced any symptoms with your sugar being that high. Were you tired? Were you nauseous? or Did you just not feel "right"?

Otherwise I will say this - I was on Lantus for long acting insulin and Novolog for short acting insulin last year (I changed to an insulin pump in December). I also gave insulin shots every meal - I found that the only way to keep my blood sugar down consistently was to give myself shots with snacks as well. Hence the reason I switched to the insulin pump. I was having to give myself upwards of 8 shots a day because I was snacking so much.

I hope you are able to work out the problem - also it may very well be the late affects of the prednisone and the stress of everything.

Take Care,
Lindsey

If your insurance wont cover a paticular med, then I would talk with your doctor and see about getting a letter of nessessity<sp> stating the need for that insullin. I have problems with my insurance not covering certain meds and I reported it to my doctor and he took care of it for me. Just something to look into.

On another note, I also take several shots a day. my sugars tend to run 200 to mid 300's. My doctor increased my lantus for nights, but I tend to snack.... a lot. then again I am new to this part of my life and still adjusting to the sliding scale.

I do use only Humalog, a short acting insulin and I do it with everything I eat that contains carbs.
If you don´t want to give yourselve a shot with snacks too, eat cheese, ham, eggs for a snack, so you don´t need to.
