Hello Sarah- welcome! If you do a search for CFRD on here, you will get a bunch of good info (more than I can put here ).
But, in my case, I was on Prandin (and my morning fasting numbers are fine), but it worked too slowly for me, and I was getting a bunch of lows. I recently changed to a mixed insulin shot (has both a short acting and a intermediate acting insulin) called Humalog 75/25, that I am liking alot better than the Prandin.
I am going to have to ask for a fast acting insulin though, for when I have higher than normal blood sugars (will be calling my endo on Mon.).
I really fought to try to make the pill work, but it was just not fitting into the way I eat, and I do feel so much better on the shots. Everyone I talked to also said the shots are no big deal, and that sticking your finger to check your blood sugar is worse, and low and behold, they were right, lol .
For me, avoiding the lows while on the insulin is just remembering to eat on time. With the Prandin, it was willy nilly when the lows would come.
However, there are people on here who do well on the pills, and if your doctor wants you to try them, I would- if they work for you, then great! There are also different pills (fast and long acting), but I can't take several of them because they are a no no with liver disease (the meds that increase insulin sensitivity), which I have a history of.
CFRD seems to be so different from one person to the next, so reading around here I think will really help you to get a good overview of all the different issues.
I hope I have helped you some, and not confused you more .
