I tend to check mine randomly during the day but always before bed to see if i need to eat, saves me having to get up at 3am for a snack LOL!!

If you can get an insulin pump, it will change your life. I think about my diabetes a total of zero times a day now. I change my pump about every 4 days, which takes about 45 seconds to do. My A1C is always around 5. It is MHO that there is no better way to treat CFRD. Trust me....I did shots for 10 years and would NEVER NEVER go back to that way of life.

If an insulin pump is not an option for you, there is a great book called "stop the rollercoaster ride". It is a very practical book about how to get those highs and lows balanced so you are not eating and taking shots all day.
