chest x-rays

My daughter has not had many lung problems at all. She was on one round of oral antibiotics in the last four years when she had her yearly x-ray in October. It showed gas trappings, mucus, diaphragm pushed too low, etc. Basically, the doctor said it showed lung disease. We would have no idea that anything was going on unless we had this x-ray. The results of her x-ray started the discussion that she needed a feeding tube and a nissan fundoplication to prevent her aspirating. Also, my son had pneumonia once as an infant. The doctor couldn't hear the mucus in the lungs and they were about to send us home from the ER when it was suggested that we get an x-ray. The x-ray showed pneumonia. Now I always ask for an x-ray when my son doesn't sound good.

I get them once a year as well and also if I am really sick. It helps them see if any other areas of my lungs are affected. Also, one time I wasn't feeling exceptionally sick but it was time for my yearly x-ray and they found traces of pneumonia in my lungs. That would have gone undiscovered for a much longer time had I not had the xray.

The companies in Japan always have their employees get a physical once every year. If a problem comes up (blood tests, eye tests, etc.,) they send in their report for you to see your doctor about whatever they find is out of the "healthy" range. I've always had bad results on my liver tests, but they never said anything about my x-rays.
However, I still have a few x-rays at my house from a year ago, when I took them to the States. My sister asked a friend who was an x-ray technician, and after he saw the x-rays, said "this looks real good for a 40 year old with CF!"
I had another x-ray test last August, which was sponsored by the city I live in...they also sponsored the "barium ride" I got when they were checking my gastrointestinal tract. They found abnormalities there, but didn't seem to be too alarmed about it!

I used to get them once a year, but that's dropped off. I like to visualise things, not that I understand anything on an x-ray, but hey!

Nope, I am not a fan of them and my Dr. agrees that unless something wierd is going on...he knows I have CF he doesn't need to see an x-ray.

In fact one of the funnest things I got to do while I was in the hosital last time was decline x-rays the intern kept requesting. everyday he kept re-writing the order and everyday I declined it as un-necessary. Then he came in and tried to explain how it was standard procedure and (my favorite part) I really shouldn't decline treatment because they probably see the bigger picture that I don't have. HAAAAA! I had him call my Dr. in front of me and explain that to him. I almost felt sorry for the guy....nah it was too funny. When he got off the phone I just smiled and explained that it was okay it's a teaching/learning hospital and he just learned I know what I'm talking about.

I usually have all of my annual stuff scheduled for the same time so that my doc has a good idea of my baseline. Annual stuff includes:

chest x-ray
oral glucose tolerance test (YUCK!)
dexascan (every other year)
vitamin levels

I also have x-rays done whenever I'm experiencing an exacerbation.
