Chest Xrays: How often?

Please excuse my mistake. It is not a suggestion by the CFF for annual execution.

Here's more info...
The role of chest imaging in the monitoring of adults with CF has not been extensively studied. Standardized chest radiograph scoring may be useful in documenting the progression of disease or response to therapeutic intervention.2728 The committee did not support the use of annual surveillance chest radiographs but reached a consensus opinion that posterior/anterior and lateral chest films should be obtained every 2 to 4 years in patients with stable clinical status. Imaging also should be considered for patients with signs or symptoms consistent with a significant acute pulmonary exacerbation, pneumothorax, lobar atelectasis, or hemoptysis. Chest CT scans may be appropriate in certain clinical situations but cannot be recommended on a routine basis.

Our local clinic does them once a year, but we've had issues with accuracy and usually end up having to take DS to the children's hospital for a more accurate xray or scan. So we refuse to have it done locally. His cf clinic in the city has done lung scans about every two years.

Thank you for all the responses. Yes, my husband goes to an accredited cf center at the University of Michigan. The last time he had xrays done was when he had an exacerbation.

Liza when you refer to lung scan what do you mean? CT scan? Emily has only had xrays to date and is due for her first ct scan later this year but those will only be done on a routine basis every 2yrs with xrays inbetween on an as-needed basis.

Lauren, do you know if those are the most recent recommendations in the article you posted? I notice it is dated 2004. I know our clinic is meeting with radiology this spring and going over guidelines on how to effectively keep tabs on disease progression while minimizing exposure to radiation after going over guidelines at the last few conferences they attended; not sure if that will be ped side only or adults as well though.

Lung scan involves nebbing a radioactive isotope, then going thru CT type scan. Especially good view in terms of what may be happening with the small airways. We've watched on the computer screen while they take pictures of his lungs from different angles.

He has had CT scans in the past when the local xrays showed infiltration, but apparently that wasn't the case.

My clinic does annual chest x-rays, unless there is something going on and they need to check for pneumonia or something. I got my first CT scan a few months ago because my doctor and I wanted to see what was *really* going on in my lungs.
