Cipro and Prednisone

Hi everyone,

I am aware that Cipro may cause diarrhea and nauseau. I have been on Cipro for the past two weeks and did not develop these side-effects. However, my doctor has recently added Prednisone to the Cipro given the wheezing in my lungs. I was supposed to continue this treatment for another week. However, I have now developed some form of gastro and have had to completely abandon treatment till I recover from the gastro.

Has anyone else experienced an adverse reaction to combining Cipro and Prednisone?

It may not be so much the combination of the two, but even just the way your body is reacting to the predinsone. Maybe try the prednisone without the Cipro. My husband had some stomach problems with the prednisone too, but he wasn't on Cipro at the time.

Hi everyone,

The gastro continues to persist despite the discontinuance of Cipro and Prednisone. It turns out I may have now developped C. Difficile due to the use of Cipro. I will know the results in the next 24-48 hours. Has this ever happened to anyone?

I've had C Dif before. Basically, they treat it with oral antibiotics (yes, ironically this is brought on by antibiotics, but treated with them). Your gastro symptoms (I'm assuming its diarhea and the like?) should go away with the C Dif treatment

Yes, the sypmtoms are very much diarrhea.

When you were treated for C. Difficile, were you able to tolerate the antibiotics? Given that my stomach is already upset, I am concerned about introducing other antibiotics. In your case, did the antibiotics for C. Difficile cause more stomach upset before improvement?

I also understand that once an individual has C. Difficile, there is a higher chance of getting it again. It appears that this has never happened to you given that you stated that you had C. Difficile only once. I am concerned about how easy it is to treat this form of bacteria, given the media attention it has been getting where I live.

I've had C Dif a few times. But it doesn't occur every time I am on an antibiotic. In terms of stomach tolerance, I had no trouble with the treatments. Obviously, it will take a few days to kick in, so you will likely continue to have stomach problems, but the pill itself didn't seem to cause any. Well, it did taste awful, but aside from that, it was nothing, and the treatment works.

I'm curious what you mean by 'media attention'... where do you live?

Hi Coll,

I live in Canada. In the peak winter months, there was an outbreak of C. Diff in hospitals in which they were having difficulties containing it. It got quite a bit of media attention.

I am still awaiting results, but given that I now feeling better, I beleive that the results will end up being negative. I can't imagine that one can test positive for C. Diff and have an improvement in health. I would tend to think that if it was C. Diff, there would be a continuous deterioration in health.

My son is 3 and take Cipro but he has never had problems with it. His Dr gives him Orapred for weezing and it is wounderful. It knocks it out in like 4-5 days. May be you can try that. Collins Mom

My doctor gave me predisone for the first time. Just a two week supply it has not bothered my stomach no pain., but has given me more gas.

After a few days I heard noises from my stomach that I have never heard before.

Hi Everyone,

Just an update. It turns out that the upset stomach, nauseau, diarrhea episode was not related to Cipro nor the Prednisone, nor did I test positive for C. Diff. I had meconium ileus equivalent. My system was cleaned out with Golytel.

I am now back on my feet running.

Thanks to all who responded.

I don't know about Cipro and Prednisone together, but Prednisone itself has some lousy side effects. It gave me AWFUL acne, made me gain an extra, poofy 25 lbs, and made me pretty miserable. Hopefully, you'll be able to avoid these effects. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-confused.gif" border="0">

HI, I was just put on Prednisone for a month. The only other time that I was on it was when I was only 2yrs old so I can't remember what happened to me then. I was just wondering how long a person has to be on the meds to experience the side effects?
