Cleaning the Dressing on your Port?

I use the chloraprep kit because i am so dang sensitive !! I will have to take note as to the order she uses them...

One question , why are u doing this ? & not the home health care nurse ? Hope all goes well..

You can use just the chloraprep, or use 1 alcohol swab, then the betadines, then the other 2 alcohols. My nurse said something about the way the alcohol and betadine work together using the one alcohol before makes the both of them more effective

This may be done in the event that the patient that receives it has an allergy to one of the listed cleaning agents they can use the other. I am only bringing that up because I am allergic to iodine so in years past when I had my port my nurse had to use alcohol that she brought herself because dressing kits I would get would only contain an iodine cleaning agent.

I would imagine using one would be sufficient like I said it is probably to cover all their bases.

Also to add my nurse always had the little alcohol stick things that you break and it releases the alcohol to clean the area. She normally used about 4 of them to clean an iv access or port access and I never had a problem. If you are concerned about what to do I would call the docs office and ask though.
