Has your daughter had a culture lately? What antibiotics does her strain of MRSA show sensitivity to? My son has never grown MRSA, so I'm not up to date on the antibiotics used to treat it. Was the cipro used to treat MRSA before?..or was it used to treat a different organism?

Cipro is commonly used in combination with TOBI to treat pseudomonas exacerbations. If your doctor is looking at her last culture results he/she will be choosing from a list of antibiotics your daughter's MRSA was sensitive to. She may be resistant to cipro with this organism, which is why they can't use it.

You should be able to get this answer quickly by calling your clinic. Your nurse should be able to give you her sensitivities over the phone and then you will know all of your options in treating her current infection.
Good luck!

My daughter is 6 as well and has been on Clindamycin too many times to count for her MRSA. She has never had any side effects. But I will say this, Abby never complains about anything, I guess she has a very high pain tolerance. But I do keep a very close eye on her and have never noticed any stomach problems or anything else for that matter. Now the prednisone always hide side effects with Abby. It makes her face swell, she eats us out of house and home (which is great for packing on some extra weight) and it weakens her immune system. All that being said, it usually clears up the problem at hand when she gets put on the meds your daughter is on. Hope that helps, and I hope she gets better soon! <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

I was on clindamycin several times when I was younger without much trouble. I don't take it any more because my MRSA has become resistant, nothing to do the side effects. A little photo-sensitivity, sometimes acid reflux (part of the reason that I started taking various heartburn meds), but nothing that stopped me from taking it. It's in a different drug class from bactrim so it would be a logical next drug to try if your daughter is having trouble with the side effects. I have known lots of people who have taken clindamycin for various conditions without horror stories.

I'm guessing your daughter took cipro to treat a PA infection. Although it might have a limited effect on MRSA, it is primarily for gram-negative bacteria (PA) not gram-positive (MRSA). If your daughter is only growing MRSA it wouldn't make sense to go to cipro first.

Thanks so much for your responses. Today is her second day on the antibiotic and so far so good. She woke up last night complaining of acid reflux and after sitting up for a few minutes she went back to sleep without a problem. She will be taking it 3 times a day.
