Clinic Visit

DS had a "well child" visit today (regular peds) and also had his labs, culture & xrays done for the year. I was disappointed to find out that he's gone down in weight -- 25th percentile He's usually been at 50 or higher. He's been more active -- playing outside at preschool, gymnastics or swimming lessons twice a week, has gone thru a pickier eating phase, but we can't force feed him. I'm bummed.

Had a hearing and eye test -- poor kid looked like a deer caught in the headlights. New experience for him.

They did strap him to a vest and neb hypertonic saline in hopes of trying to get him to hack up a loogey, but he couldn't get the spit part down. Plus he told me he liked the taste of the nebs, so he probably kept swallowing, so they had to do a regular swab. Was interesting to see how he reacted to the HTS -- got a productive cough going. Currently he's on pulmozyme and when we'd asked his CF doctor about HTS, he'd wanted to see more studies done on smaller children.

After his trip to the clinic, I was racing to meet up with his preschool class, who were all attending a kids fair and he told me he was hungry. The ONE time I didn't have any food in my car for him. Fortunately, I got to the park and noticed his schools van had just arrived and they were getting ready for lunch.

Just have to figure out how to get more calories in him at meal times. I just don't want it to become an all out war or struggle.

Hi

I just want to say that you should get HTS for your son as soon as they will let you...! My daughter was on three percent this past year and her PFT's went up! yay! (after 6 months there was no decline (she was declining previously.) and now they have gone up.) She also has not needed antibiotics nearly as much as she used too.

I know how overwhelming it is to feed a small child (especially one with CF.) It seems like they need to eat ALL the time. Personally, i think it is not worth the struggle though. In my experience it is better to provide frequent, healthy meals and let them eat as much as they want than it is to struggle with them about food. It is so hard though. I used to feel so stressed about it and was constantly worried i didn't feed my daughter enough. We had plenty of struggles as a result. I ended up reading an article about feeding habits of parents with CF toddlers and it said meal times averaged half an hour longer, with more struggles, but that food intake by the child was not increased as a result. It also disscussed the development of negative eating habits, i think. Anyway i really relaxed (or tried to ) after that. It was a hard habit to break though.

Anyway i have to get back to work now!

I guess my problem is that I DID relax as far as his eating. If he said he didn't want to eat, I didn't push him. Waited for him to tell me he was hungry. So I'm feeling a bit guilty for not trying harder.

Could just be a fluke, too. Was an early morning appointment and maybe he took a huge dump at preschool before I picked him up. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0"> Other appointments when he's been weighed have been late afternoon.

We'll see where his vitamin levels are, too next week.

Hey Lisa...

Maybe Max is just going through a growth spurt and his weight didn't catch up yet... Don't be hard on yourself.... I have found especially with preschoolers the more you push an issue the more they will go to the opposite extreme...

You always sound like you do such a great job with Max... How about adding more cream to his creamy milk, I was looking in the freezer section of the food store the other day and the Aunt Jamima breakfast (TV dinner style) breakfast had a little hashbrown, pancakes and sausage and had over 18 grams of fat and close to 1600 calories... It is a tiny little breakfast thing... It floored me....

Remember though weight changes up and down are normal in all kids.... I know you have to be more careful in CFers but don't think it is something you did or didn't do..like I said you seem like you are doing such a great job
