Hi Kelly, sorry your having problems with your port, hopefully your docs can get it straightened out. I had my port a couple of years (loved it) but had to have it removed in june due to a blood clot in my jugular and sub clavien. i had to be on blood thinners for six months after that, am now off. last time i was in for a tune up i had a picc line, when i get piccs i will have to be on blood thinners and i i ever get another port will have to be on thinners from then on..

This may sound a bit dumb. I am lost. Can someone explain the difference between a PICC line and a Port? Where do they put a Port? and Why?

I have had a PICC line 3 times in the past 4 years...so i know what a PICC line is i just had not heard of a Port.

Thanks

Hope this helps tapia.

The port has been the best thing ever for Kj. Her veins were collapsing all the time.
so iv's were very painful. But with the port she is pain free <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

A port is more permanent....meant to last longer. A picc also has the extra tubing hanging out of the arm so it can be accessed. A port does havent anything hanging unless its accessed. A port is under the skin so you can shower/go swimming etc when its not accessed.

Thanks everyone.

I will look into a stronger heparin. That sounds like a great thing, but they haven't mentioned it.

I always had trouble getting PICCs in my arm too. I'm pretty happy so far with the port, so I just hope it continues to work well.

Tapia, the doctors usually bring the topic up once you have consistent problems getting piccs in. Sounds like your veins are still doing well. That's great.
