the caffeine in coffee is a stimulant which does help open up the airways in small quantities HOWEVER it is also a diuretic so it dehydrates.

Thus if we only had say non-productive asthma it owuld be win win but since we are so productive anything that dehydrates us is loose-loose.

I drink 1-3 cups a week if I really really need it, I try to balance those days with extra water.

My daughter is 21 and drinks a ton of Dr. Pepper but never coffee or tea. She has never said that it makes her lungs feel better, but she also cannot even get started until she has had her first DP. When she is on antibiotics though, she has trouble getting past the metallic taste and switches to juice. She always seems to get more mucus up after her Dr. Pepper.

There is a safer way to get the anti-inflammatory benefits of caffeine without running the risk of dehydration like you would get with a carbonated, caffeinated soda. Try having a small amount of dark chocolate here and there. The darker the chocolate, the higher it is in antioxidants.

Enjoy!</end quote>

I have never been a coffee/tea/cola drinker but I do love my chocolate...especially dark chocolate!

...speaking of caffeine, I thought I'd post an article I read the other day...

An alkaloid, caffeine acts as a stimulant and is commonly found in coffee, tea, soda and energy drinks. The severity of those stimulating properties, addictivesness and potential health problems are widely debated. However, most agree that because tolerance levels vary, everyone responds differently to caffeine. Here's some helpful facts:

Did you know - The International Food Information Council considers moderate daily caffeine consumption to be 300 mgs - or about three cups of coffee. (Cup of coffee = 100 mg)

How much?
SODAS
*Mountain Dew = 55 mgs per 12 oz
*Coca-Cola = 34.5 mgs per 12 oz, while ....
*Diet Coke = 45 mgs per 12 oz !!!
*Decaf Coffee is 97 % free of caffeine
*Average Iced Tea = 47 mgs per 12 oz, while ...
Snapple = 31.5 mgs per 16 oz
&
Litpon Brisk = 9 mgs per 12 oz

TREATS
*Dark Chocolate = 31 mgs per 60 oz bar - more than...
*Milk Chocolate = 9 mgs per 60 oz bar
*Kit Kat = 5.9 mgs per 1.5 oz
*Snickers = 4.7s mg per 2 oz
*some Nabisco Snackwell cookies(mint creme) = 41.5 mg PER COOKIE!!!

MEDICINES
*No-Doz = contains as much caffeine as a cup of coffee per 100 mg caplet
*Excedrin = 130 mgs per pill
*Anacin = 64 mgs per pill
*Midol (menstrual formula) = 60 mgs per pill
*Triaminicin = 30 mgs per pill
*Dristan = 16.2 mgs per pill
