Cold - do you wait or get straight onto antibiotics

Archie is showing some cold symptoms. I am predicting this is the
beginning of a cold as he has a runny nose, has been sneezing and
coughing now and again (just a dry cough - no production),
His Dad has the cold and I am feeling like I'm getting it as
well - runny nose/ dry coldy throat. Should I take him to doc's and
get on antibiotics before it hits his chest or should I wait to see
if he it actually goes to the chest and he gets a productive cough?
His Dad who has had it for a couple of days and is the spreader
(bless him not his fault I guess) says he is a bit chesty not too
bad but has a bit of phlem happening. My thoughts are to get it
before it goes down into the chest but don't want to put him
antibiotics if not required.
What would you do?
I would wait. I just had a cold and believe it or not, it didn't go into my chest.

I believe this happened because I followed Dr. Warwick's advice of doing increase HFCC therapy....which ensured that I kept my lungs clear.

I also used Zicam at the 1st sign of getting my cold. I believe in this product as it has helped reduce the severity of my cold year after year....

So watch your kidd-o. Keep his lungs clear. Hydrate him. Let him sleep. Hopefully the cold won't go into his chest and he'll be ok

We usually wait. Sean's beat his share of colds without them going into his chest. Even when he has gotten a chest cold, we've taken a wait and see approach. We usually don't call the clinic until he starts bringing up "greenies". We do, however, up his treatments as soon as we suspect something.

We usually wait. My daughter generally can beat a cold on her own. I agree with Amy, make sure to keep him hydrated and he rests.

I would call the doc .. mainly for the reason that if you think you are getting sick too then this bug will most likely be hanging out around your house for at least another week or so. I would just make the doc aware of what is going on - they may be able to give you something or some ideas as to how to stave off any further infection for him.

I know for me I normally do okay when my mom gets sick but when EVERYONE in the house starts catching it --- my mom . then passes it to my step dad and then my step bro I always end up having a problem right around the time it goes from person 2 to person 3.

I hope that it stays out of his lungs, but like I said I would call the doc and maybe just give them a heads up and ask their opinion on what to do if anything.

If he is sneezing, runny nose, coughing more (though it may be dry) it sounds like he already has the beginning of a sinus infection. I know those are the things they always ask me when they think I have a sinus infection anyway.

Thanks Guys, I have to go to doc anyway for me so I will take him
down and just maybe get a script on hand in case he starts getting
congested. I'm inclined to wait usually too but that fact the I
have it and his Dad has it and it is in my chest makes me think it
may do the same with him - but you never know.
Thanks again for your advice - much appreciated.
Amy what is Zicam? I wonder if we have it here in Aus. I will ask
Doc about it.

Ciao for now
